Organizational Setting
The Forestry Department ensures the development of policies, strategies and guidelines and provides advisory and technical services to FAO
Members. It collects, analyses and disseminates information to FAO Members and serves as a neutral forum for policy and technical dialogue between nations on matters related to forests. The Department promotes the FAO mission in forestry, which is to enhance human well-being through support to member countries in the sustainable management of the world’s trees and forests. The Department ensures an effective
balance among the environmental and production aspects of forests; the economic aspects of forests; and the social and institutional aspects of forests. The Department leads programme entities in sustainable forest management; the conservation of forests and fragile ecosystems;
forest plantations and trees outside forests; forests and water; forests and climate change; forest resource assessments; forestry sector
outlook studies; economic aspects of forests; forest products information; utilization of forest products and wood-based energy; strengthening
national institutional capacities; forest policies and governance; forests, poverty alleviation and food security; participatory forestry and sustainable livelihoods; international forestry processes; and forestry information.
The post is located in the Statutory Bodies, CPF and Outreach Team (FODI) in the Office of the Assistant Director General, Forestry Department.
Reporting Lines
The consultant/PSA will report to the Team Leader of the Statutory Bodies, CPF and Outreach Team of the Forestry Department or to relevant forestry officer in assigned project or programme team.
 
Technical Focus
The consultant will support FAO Forestry in the development, editorial production, quality assurance and dissemination of information materials both for technical audiences and for the general public, while working in close collaboration and liaison with FAO staff at Rome headquarters and regional and country offices, as well as key partners.
 
Tasks and responsibilities
 
  • Support knowledge management and information sharing by developing or advising on related strategies and products.
  • Research, write and edit project materials, including outreach work plans.
  • Research, write and edit information materials, including newsletters, blogs web stories, leaflets, talking points, key messages, brochures, documents and reports related to the work undertaken by the Forestry Department.
  • Draft, edit and upload web content.
  • Copy edit, proofread and provide quality assurance of information materials.
  • Track the production of global and country level publications from draft through design and delivery using the FAO publication management system.
  • Support knowledge sharing events and exchanges
  • Other related tasks as required.
 

 
 
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Competencies required for this position are excellent communication skills, especially in writing, editing and research, the ability to co-ordinate with internal and external partners, expertise in the development of outreach materials and the ability to work with a high level of independence.
Minimum Requirements
  • Advanced university degree (for consultants), or university degree for a PSA in the field of communication and media, public relation, journalism, humanities, English or related fields.
  • Minimum one year (for base level consultants/PSAs)/five years (for middle level consultants/PSAs) of relevant experience.
  • Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese, Russian (for CSTs only). Working knowledge of one of the FAO Languages for PSAs.
