TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR INTERNSHIP

Organizational Unit: Regional Bureau for the Americas

Duty station: Geneva, Switzerland

Duration of the internship: 6 months

Expected start date: 15 October

Background Information
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. Every year, millions of men, women and children are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. UNHCR teams are in the field in over 125 countries, using their expertise to protect and care for nearly 55 million people. The internship will be placed with Regional Bureau for the Americas and will be focussed on external relations issues. This exciting internship is a unique opportunity to gain experience in external relations, reporting and organisation of events as well as experience working within the UN system.
Duties and Responsibilities
We are seeking a dynamic and proactive team player, with a strong interest in communication and refugee issues, to complete a six-month internship within the Regional Bureau for the Americas. The External Relations Intern will be expected to:
¿ Assist in the design, production and translation of newsletters, fundraising documents, factsheets and ad-hoc reports for internal and external use.
¿ Assist with the development of standard presentations of the work of the Bureau and the region.
¿ Manage and update the Bureau¿s intranet page
¿ Support in the organization of events
¿ Keep calendar of events and missions up to date
¿ Provide any other required support, as needed

Minimum qualifications required
Possess a Bachelor¿s degree in a relevant field, for example Communication and Media Studies, Refugee and Forced Displacement Studies, Migration Studies, International Studies or Social Sciences.
Be a strong communicator with fluency in English and in Spanish, including advanced writing, translating and editing skills.
Have design and document formatting skills.
Experience using Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign is desirable.
Have strong research and organizational skills which includes a good understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
Have advanced experience using the Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Publisher and Powerpoint).
Show a genuine desire to learn and adapt.
Have good inter-personal skills and be a keen team-player.

Eligibility
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
¿ Recent graduates (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university of higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
¿ Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
Please note that candidates who have immediate relatives (father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister) working as staff members of UNHCR are not eligible.

Food and Local Transportation Allowance
Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
