Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Unit/ Project Background:

UN Women at the global level focuses its activities on 5 areas of interventions:

  1. Increase women’s leadership, political participation and implement gender sensitive governance;
  2. Develop women’s economic empowerment;
  3. Ending violence against women;

UN Women Multi-Country Office (MCO) for the Maghreb based in Rabat, Morocco is looking for a Programme Management Intern for a 6-months period to support the Programme Management Specialist in designing, implementing and following-up key programmes in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria.

Duties and Responsibilities

Description of Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Program Management Specialist, the intern will:

  1. Support the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the UN Women MCO for the Maghreb’s projects & programs:
  • Support the UN Women MCO for the Maghreb in designing new projects/programmes on women’s leadership and political participation, women’s economic empowerment, eliminating violence against women and girls, gender-responsive planning and budgeting
  • Develop research on various topics related to women’s human rights in the three countries
  • Support the development of briefs and synthetic notes in direction of the regional office for Arab States or the Headquarters in New-York
  • Ensure efficient coordination between the different internal stakeholders
  • Contribute to implement and share best practices within the UN Women MCO for the Maghreb’s team
  • Support the team in preparing high level events, consultations and other national and regional events
  1. Contribute to UN Women MCO for the Maghreb’s partnership strategy:
  • Contribute to the design of UN Women MCO for the Maghreb’s partnership strategy
  • Support the communication and appropriation of the strategy
  • Actively support the design and appropriation of appropriate tools and practices for every stage of the partnerships strategy
  • Actively participate to the implementation of partnerships, including innovative partnerships
  •  Ensure the improvement of Knowledge Management and best practices sharing within the UN Women MCO for Maghreb’s team
  • Support the monitoring and evolution of UN Women MCO for the Maghreb’s partnership strategy
  1. Contribute to Knowledge Management and Communication:
  • Support the design and implementation of tools and processes aiming at improving the MCO’s Knowledge Management sharing
  • In coordination with the Communication specialist, draft quality and substantive papers to update UNW MCO parteners
  • Identify and document best practices and ensure their dissemination at the subregional (Maghreb) and regional (Arab States) levels?

Learning Objectives:

  • Familiarity with the UN system structure, organization and goals of UN Women strategies in country
  • Operational and ‘hands-on’ experience in all substantive aspects of development management and programming within UN Women
  • In-depth, knowledge of the principle gender issues affecting women in the country of assignment
  • In-depth, first-hand knowledge of UN Women’s corporate strategies and innovative approaches to advance gender equality and women’s rights
  • In depth knowledge of international norms and mechanisms on women’s rights;

Learning elements:

  • Upon arrival, the intern will learn about UN Women’s mandate and guiding normative framework. She/he will also be introduced to the work undertaken in the MCO and in the region
  • In first three months he/she will be given ‘hands on’ exposure to the work of the MCO
  • In first six months, he/she will be guided in supporting and subsequently helping expand the Country Office’s portfolio, advocacy and knowledge management.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in economics, international relations or political sciences, law, business administration, public administration or other similar subject at the university level.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in French and English are required; Working knowledge of Arabic is a distinct advantage

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

Note:

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment

UN Women Internship Policy:

1.) Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a)    Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b)    Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);

(c)    Have graduated with a university degree (as (a)(b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

2.) UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;

3.) All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;

4.) UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;

5.) The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;

6.)  Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to positions in the professional and above category in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;

7.) The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application
