Save the Children (SC) is the world’s leading independent child rights’ organization: it fights for children’s rights and delivers immediate and lasting improvement to children’s lives worldwide. The organization has existed in India since the pre-Independence days. Save the Children, India (SC India) is the 28th independent member of the International Save the Children Movement.

Background:USAID has committed to supporting a new program on Urban Health under the Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP) known as the ‘Healthy Cities’ program. MCSP is USAID’s global cooperative agreement to introduce and support high-impact health interventions in 24 priority countries, including India, with the ultimate goal of ending preventable maternal and child deaths (EPCMD) within a generation. Leadership for the proposed ‘Healthy Cities’ program from Population Services International (PSI) will involve designing an impactful intervention based on evidence, determining collaboration, steering the partnership with MCSP partners and others and being accountable for delivering the log frame results.

USAID/India investment through PSI will strengthen the health delivery ecosystem in select urban geographies for ending preventable child and maternal deaths (EPCMD) among under- or inadequately-served urban poor including slum dwellers through provision of free health services from public and private sectors. It is envisaged that the approaches will draw upon lessons learned and evidences from other urban health programs in India and abroad. The aim is to promote innovative ideas that can leapfrog conventional approaches to accelerate substantial and sustainable progress in reducing maternal, newborn and child deaths. In terms of thrust, two third of the investments will be directed towards family planning while remaining resources will focus on other high impact interventions in the maternal and child health space.

The program will be a platform to mobilize existing resources, both government and private. The approaches will incorporate the latest game changing strategies and evidence based interventions that lead to radical solutions. With an objective of scaling up transformational approaches to strengthen health delivery ecosystems in select urban geographies for ending preventable child and maternal deaths, the new program is likely to adopt the following strategies:-
  1. Unlocking government resources and private sector expertise and channelizing them in efficient and effective ways to achieve the EPCMD goal in urban settings:
  2. Engaging communities through social behavior change communication for demand generation
  3. Demonstrating innovative service delivery models for RMNCH+A
