Background Information - Job-specific

National governments, civil society and the private sector are struggling to keep up with rapid technological advances in the digital sphere that provide enormous opportunities but can also prove disruptive and with potential for misuse by state and non-state actors. Against this backdrop, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres established a High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation in July 2018. The Panel consists of 22 eminent leaders from Governments, the private sector, academia, the technical community, and civil society. The Panel is tasked with advancing proposals in the form of a final report to strengthen cooperation in the digital space among Governments, the private sector, civil society, international organizations, the technical and academic communities and all other relevant stakeholders. The Panel’s report and its recommendations will support Member States in their consultations on these issues and provide a high-level independent contribution to the broader public debate.

A Secretariat has been established to provide substantive and process support to the Panel’s activities.

This internship is offered with the Secretariat.


Functional Responsibilities

The Communications Intern will have the following responsibilities;

  • Assist the Communications Team with the production of presentations, multimedia content (video, photography, audio) and other web or print content as necessary.
  • Assist the Communications Team with research, design, layout, and editing.
  • Assist the Communications Team with condensing research findings into accessible multi-media outputs such as graphics, presentations, and publications.
  • Assist with events related communications tasks such as social media outreach pre, during and post-event. 

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education
  • A first-level university degree in Journalism, Communications, Art & Design, Public Relations or related subject is required.
  • A recent graduate or current enrolment in a post-graduate degree in Journalism, Communications, Art & Design, Public Relations or related subject is highly preferred.

 Experience 

  • Experience in developing multi-media communications content and products for different audiences
  • Experience in graphic design, branding, and layout, information design and information architecture, visual communications, media design, system design or related – and proven experience in translating complex ideas into clear visuals
  • Previous internship or work experience in a digital technology related field is preferred.
  • Previous internship experiences can be considered as work experience 
  • Digital media storytelling and production experience (video, photo or layout).
  • Clear, persuasive communication and design skills, for both traditional (PPT) and digital mediums.
  • Experience with data science, innovation or technology writing and communications.
  • Experience/ strong knowledge of design platforms like Adobe Creative Suite, design techniques, software, data visualization.
  • Comfort with virtual collaboration platforms such as Slack, Skype, Google Drive, etc. 
  • Pro-active worth ethic, able to thrive in an entrepreneurial environment.
  • Ability to work with a diverse team in a rapidly-changing work environment: Proven experience working with a diverse team and being able to parse through large amounts of information in order to create synthesized and clear designs.

Language

Fluency in English is required.

Please note that the intern is expected to work at least 3 days a work (20-24 hours)



This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend  from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions. Further, UNOPS may provide a one time travel lumpsum of 500 USD. However, they must make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and necessary visa arrangements.
