There is a growing momentum building in the cities space for international development. The past three years have seen the emergence of a new global policy framework on cities, climate, resilience, and urban development assistance by the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and the New Urban Agenda. Against this background, the Cities Alliance has developed its 2018-2021 Strategic Plan, which put forward a recalibrated business model combining global programmes for normative work and country/city programmes for operations across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the MENA region.

Cities Alliance is seeking a highly motivated and dynamic Communications Analyst to support the new business model and the 2018-2021 Strategic Plan with the aim of expanding the visibility, outreach and branding of the organisation. The Communications Analyst will work as part of a team and report to the Communications Officer. Under his/her guidance, the Communications Analyst will contribute to the planning and implementation of the Cities Alliance communication strategy, the development of its communications products and dissemination activities as well as its social media platforms. The Communications Analyst will also contribute to effective and efficient team work and results that are delivered on time, within budget and to the highest quality standards.



Functional Responsibilities

  • Support the Communications Officer to design and implement a communication and publication and events strategy and work plan.
  • Under the guidance of the Communications Officer, support the content development, editing, production and dissemination of communication and marketing materials for the Cities Alliance. This may include:
    • Newsletters, flyers, brochures, factsheets, information leaflets, blogs, infographics and tweets for multi-media channels, posters and banners for international events;
    • Web content;
    • Publications, including the annual report and corporate scorecard;
    • Corporate powerpoints presentations, briefs, speeches and talking points.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with external vendors and consultants for quality, editing, design and printing of materials.
  • Coordinate corporate social platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, and Youtube. Design global and local social media campaigns for special events and topics.
  • Support the collection and analysis of website and social media metrics to gauge reach, engagement and other performance measures to inform external visibility and branding strategies.
  • Support the preparation of high priority events with tailored communication and outreach plans including booth set up, coordinating with external vendors related to the event, targeted materials, social media, press and public relations.
  • Support the membership and business development functions of the team with the conceptualization of fundraising and marketing materials to raise awareness of Cities Alliance and its work, and with a view to reaching new audiences and potential donors.
  • Provide technical guidance to staff on best practices on use of social media for outreach and advocacy.
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with programme managers and stakeholders to ensure relevance and constant update of content.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education Master’s degree in Communications Studies, Urban Studies, Economics, Development Studies, Social and Political Science or related field is required. A first level university degree (bachelors) with two additional years of relevant experience related to the responsibilities of the position may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.

Experience
  • Minimum two (2) years of work experience in communications, international development, or other relevant professional areas is required. 
  • Previous experience in developing countries and/or prior work experience with UN Agencies or other international development institutions would be an asset.

Languages
Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French and/or Spanish would be considered an asset.
