 FAO Country Office in Uzbekistan is responsible for partnership with and support to the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan, bringing together technical assistance innovative, international best practices and global normative work standards with national and regional expertise.

Tasks and responsibilities
 
 
  • Prepare Work program including tentative dates of field missions to be conducted;
  • Develop a Concept proposal for restoration of degraded forests in Uzbekistan. The principles of the framework Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism (FLRM) and of the Global guidelines for the restoration of degraded forests and landscapes in drylands published by FAO should be considered and adjusted if deemed adequate at the level of forestry organizations. The concept proposal should provide a guideline for rehabilitation of degraded forests. The aim is to restore carbon sequestration and protective functions of forests mainly regarding water and soil conservation through engagement of local communities. The concept proposal should include but is not limited to the following parts\: Prioritization criteria for restoration, globally known best practices for restoration, overview on restoration techniques adaptable for Uzbekistan including those targeting restoration of shelterbelts, list of suitable native species to be used, approaches for maintenance and success monitoring, overview on temporarily needed man-made support structures.
  • Prepare a Concept proposal for development of nurseries in Uzbekistan. Main target of the nurseries should be production of plant materials for activities including (i) rehabilitation/restoration, (ii) forest management and (iii) horticulture (i.e. fruit and nut trees, medicinal plants). The concept should include all planning considerations including, but not limited to size of the catchment area, estimation of production needs, criteria for land selection (e.g. water, local infrastructure), necessary space extend, establishment of greenhouses, work force availability, maintenance, etc.
  • Conduct trainings associated to all above deliveries, specifically a training on forest restoration techniques and a training on nurseries development. All trainings will include the following standard components
  • Concept note on the background, content of the training, target groups, etc.;
  • Training programme;
  • Training presentations;
  • Delivery of the training.
  • Support interventions on establishment of necessary nurseries and forest restoration;
  • Support building technical and institutional capacities;
  • Support - when appropriate - all national consultants by providing technical feedback on all tasks related to implementation of the project on the ground;
  • Submit Back to office reports (BTORs) after each mission as per FAO standard rules & regulations;
  • Deliver Terminal consultancy report summarizing all achievement including best practices and lessons learned.
 

 
 
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
 
 
Minimum Requirements
 
  • Advanced university degree in forestry, natural resources management or related field,
  • Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of one of the other FAO languages (French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian)
  • At least seven years of progressively professional experience in forest restoration/rehabilitation and related fields of which at least three years of exposure to forest nurseries sector
