Who are we?

Danish Refugee Council is a leading protection agency pursuing our mandate to protect and promote durable solutions to displacement-affected populations on the basis of humanitarian principles and human rights. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), DRC apply a regional approach with operational presence in Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey and Iraq.     

Present in Iraq since 2003, DRC is today operational in the Kurdish governorates, in and around Baghdad and in several South-Central governorates. Focused both on the influx of Syrian refugees and the current IDP crisis, DRC is providing assistance in a range of sectors including Camp Coordination and Camp Management, Protection, Livelihoods, Emergency Response (including food security, cash, and NFIs), WASH, Shelter and Mine Action. The Iraq programme presently employs some 450-national staff and 45 international staff, and is growing to meet new, emerging needs associated with ongoing and recent conflict in multiple locations

About the job:

The Hygiene Promotion Officer contributes to the maintenance of hygienic conditions in camp and/or non-camp settings through conducting assessments on personal and environmental hygiene, identifying key issues and planning hygiene promotion activities, supervising Hygiene Monitors in hygiene activities, and training/leading a variety of hygiene promotion activities. On a daily basis, the Hygiene Promotion Officer reports directly to Shelter and Infrastructure Project Manager, and supervises the daily activities of the Hygiene Assistants.

Responsibilities:

General

  • Plan and conduct assessments (e.g. KAP surveys) on WASH and hygiene among communities;
  • Collate data, analyze and report findings, developing an action plan to address key identified issues;
  • Identify facilitators within the communities and conduct training, ensuring regular monitoring and follow up of progress as well as ongoing capacity development;
  • Mobilize, organize and supervise, through facilitators or other means, members of the communities to take ownership of maintaining best practices in personal, community and environmental hygiene;
  • Conduct participatory hygiene promotion sessions within communities, schools, groups of persons with specific needs, according to age, gender and diversity, community-based committees and other groups, such as duty bearers and stakeholders;
  • Manage and conduct home visiting to assess, inform and motivate families to improve hygiene and living conditions when required;
  • Promote hygiene education through a variety of means, such as information sharing, dissemination, and communication materials;
  • Provide support to the distribution of hygiene items, and conduct monitoring and follow up to ensure proper usage of items and appropriateness;
  • Maintain full qualitative and quantitative records and reports of activities, dis-aggregated by age, gender and diversity where appropriate;
  • Provide regular written and verbal reports to managers upon request;
  • Develop contacts with community leaders and key stakeholders to explain and promote the organization and projects;
  • Act as a link between the organization and the beneficiaries.

  • Undertake any other duties that may be assigned by the Line Manager;
  • Conduct duties in accordance with DRC Iraq programme Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs);
  • Conduct duties in accordance with DRC Code of Conduct, HAP and other key documents.

    About you

    Experience and technical competencies: (include years of experience)

  • Education or equivalent training/experience in related field (such as water and sanitation, public health, hygiene promotion).
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ practical work experience working with vulnerable communities in the field of water/sanitation, WASH, hygiene or public health.
  • Familiarity with key health and hygiene issues and hygiene promotion/education activities in camp and/or non-camp settings.
  • Ability to read and write in English.
  • Proven experience in community mobilization, training and /or teaching.
  • Experience of working with UN or (International/National) Non-Governmental Organizations desirable.
  • Deep understanding of age, gender and diversity issues with regard to WASH.
  • Knowledge of minimum WASH standards (e.g. Sphere)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Flexibility and creativity
  • Cultural sensitivity (e.g. to age, gender and diversity) and experience working in complex / hostile environments
  • Ability to prioritize large and changeable workloads
  • Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team, including team management
  • Able to work independently and energetically

Preferred experience:

  • Education or equivalent training/experience in related field (such as water and sanitation, public health, hygiene promotion).
  • Previous experience in international organizations
  • A high level of spoken and written Arabic is essential; a good level of written and spoke English is essential.

We offer

Contract length: 6 months (renewable based on both funding and performance).

Level: C1 

Start date: 1st of Dec 2018
