Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Join a great team pushing the limits of superconducting accelerator magnets, to shape the future of CERN's largest accelerator. Take part!

You will join:

The Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostats (MSC) group of the Technology Department (TE), has the mandate to design, construct, and measure the superconducting and normal conducting Magnets for the CERN accelerator complex; integrate them in the CERN accelerator complex; design and procure the magnet cryostats; and perform the magnet quality control. The group also provides support to the operation of the accelerators for magnets, magnet performance, and devices (current leads).

The LMF section manages the large superconducting Magnets Facility. Its main responsibility is to provide a CERN-wide support for the engineering, manufacturing and maintenance of superconducting accelerator magnets, in particular for the LHC and its upgrades.

Functions

  • Integrate the logistics and infrastructure pole of the section; take the lead of specific activities related to superconducting magnets components, in strict collaboration with the quality/project responsible.
  • Coordinate a number of activities daily in the machine shop of the Large Magnet Facility section, comprising in particular several conventional milling machines and lathes and a 5-axes machining centre.
  • Centralise requests for machine shop work from colleagues in the section; plan the work in the workshop; sub-contract the manufacturing to the CERN central workshop and to the specialized firms, as appropriate.
  • Report to the responsible engineer; provide input for the resource planning.
  • Participate in activities in the LHC accelerator, such as the preparation of consolidation campaigns in the tunnel; or the removal / installation of superconducting magnets.

Qualifications

Technical certificate or general secondary education in the field of mechanics/logistics, or a related field.

Experience:

  • Experience in logistics is a strong asset.
  • Experience in coordinating the activities within a mechanical workshop of a group of craftsmen.
  • Experience in machining precision components, either metallic or non-metallic.

Technical competencies:

  • Programming and use of CNC machine-tools and machining centres, including conventional milling machines and lathes.
  • Knowledge and application of conventional dimensional metrology, particularly related to a mechanical workshop environment.
  • Knowledge of personal protective equipment, particularly related to a mechanical workshop environment.
  • Reception and distribution of goods.
  • Management of warehouse and inventory.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Achieving results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations; objectively assessing and monitoring own work; regularly reporting on progress and advising of any changes in schedule or priorities; producing comprehensive work / project plans; taking into account resources and contingencies.
  • Communicating effectively: expressing opinions, ideas, and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point; demonstrating a pro-active approach to resolving differences; addressing issues of conflict constructively; ensuring that information, procedures, and decisions are appropriately documented.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: readily absorbing new techniques and working practices; proposing new or improved ways of working.
  • Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting; using time efficiently and effectively.
  • Working in teams: understanding when teamwork is required to achieve the best results; including others accordingly and sharing information.
