What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law.  We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Role description

The Medical Equipment Specialist ensures that the medical equipment in health-care facilities run or supported by the ICRC is functioning properly and in accordance with ICRC's standards. S/he is able to help troubleshoot complex medical equipment either by visiting the health facility and providing direct support to local counterparts or by advising and guiding him/her remotely.

S/he works in supported or ICRC independent hospital structures, regularly in limited resources settings and challenging security environments.

Main Responsibilities

  • Supports the Medical Equipment Technician in planning and implementing preventive maintenance of medical equipment
  • Conducts troubleshooting and undertakes complex corrective maintenance and repairs
  • Substitutes the manufacturer's technicians in places they cannot access
  • Identifies needs for new equipment, together with the Health team, installs it and ensures the maintenance is done in due time
  • Performs quality control of medical equipment
  • As a reference, the Medical Equipment Specialist in cooperation with the Medical Equipment technician provides guidance to the health facility staff
  • Draws up reports as required and forwards them to the Hospital Administrator and/or Hospital Project Manager for dissemination
  • Liaises with the ICRC Water and Habitat and Logistics team at local, Regional and HQ levels on matters related to medical equipment
  • Represents the hospital project internally and externally on all matters related to medical equipment
  • Contributes to managing a medical equipment budget of a given health facility

Desired profile and skills

  • Strongly motivated by humanitarian work
  • Able to work under pressure and lead a multicultural team in a complex environment
  • Degree (MSc) in biomedical engineering
  • 3 years of experience in managing general medical equipment in hospital settings
  • Broad experience in working with medical equipment and suppliers
  • Previous experience in humanitarian international projects
  • Very good English verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to work under pressure and lead a multicultural team in complex environments

Your assets

  • Good command of a second language of ICRC interest, such as French, Spanish, Arabic or Russian
  • Sensitivity to cultural, ethnic and gender diversity
  • Positive, flexible and able to adapt him/herself to harsh living conditions and/or unstable security environment
  • Previous experience(s) within the Red Cross & Red Crescent movement

Our operational and field constraints

  • In line with the principle of neutrality, the ICRC does not assign personnel to a country of which they are nationals
  • Candidates must be in good health and will have to do a medical check-up prior to departure in the field
  • Candidates must possess a driving license (for manual transmission vehicles) with practice
  • Candidates must be prepared to accept unaccompanied postings (i.e. no spouse, partner, children or dependents) for at least the first 24 months.
