The Junior Archivist Intern(s) will develop archival management skills and contribute to the establishment of an archival repository. The internship will be 6 months in duration.

The UNICEF Internship Programme offers qualified and eligible students at both Headquarters (HQ) and Country Offices (CO) the unique opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF's work and the United Nations system under the direct supervision of experienced UNICEF staff.

To be considered for an internship with UNICEF, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree programme (or recent graduate);
  • Be proficient in English, knowledge of an additional UN language is considered an asset; and
  • Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.

The Enterprise Content Management (ECM) project’s goal is to take a systemic approach that introduces and institutionalizes Electronic Content Management (including systems, policies, procedures, standards, guidance, and governance), providing improved document and records management and retention, improved search functionality, strengthened archives management, a new digital preservation capability, content reuse and repurposing, and collaboration across UNICEF. 

The project also seeks to reduce risks, improve usability of tools, provide significant cost and time savings, enable new organizational capabilities and comply with several audit recommendations. These goals will be implemented in keeping with the organizational strategy and information management requirements of stakeholders in various business areas.

How can you make a difference?

The Junior Archivist Intern will develop archival management skills and contribute to the establishment of an archival repository.

The intern will report to the ECM Senior Project Manager. This internship will be for a period of 6 months.

Key Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will work directly with UNICEF’s archivists on selected archives management activities which include:

  • Processing archival records according to ISAD(G) standards;
  • Housing archival records in archival folders and boxes and other repository management duties;
  • Participating in the implementation of an Archives Management System and Trusted Digital Repository, including data entry;
  • Preparation of archival records for their digitization;
  • Any other duties as required.

Deliverables:

  • Archival Finding aids;
  • Descriptive Metadata lists;
  • Digitized archival items with proper metadata; 
  • Archival items stored in appropriate folders and boxes and correctly labelled.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Be enrolled in a degree programme in an undergraduate or graduate school in archival studies, or be a recent graduate with specific post-secondary education in archival studies;
  • Demonstrated understanding of international archival standards, including ISAD(G);
  • Demonstrated understanding of archival metadata and its application;
  • A strong academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records;
  • A reference letter from a current or past academic supervisor;
  • No immediate relatives working in any UNICEF office.

Language(s) 

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.  

Travel

Travel is not required.

  • Cover Letter outlining i) reason for application, ii) areas of interest (related to graduate courses) in English, iii) practical experience in any aspect of archives management (if any, in class or at work)
  • Sample fonds description showing all levels of description according to the ISAD (G) standard.

A monthly stipend as contribution towards living and transportation expenses will be provided up to $1,500.00 for the selected candidate.
