Teacher (Greek Language)

DRC has been operating in Greece since November 2015, providing support to the Greek Ministry of Migration Policy in ensuring dignified reception conditions for refugees and migrants arriving on Lesvos island. In March 2016, DRC expanded its operations in Athens, in response to the changing context and the build-up of refugee population on mainland Greece. 

 

Under the overall supervision of the Education Team Leader and with the technical guidance from Education Coordinator and the Education Advisor, the Greek teacher will be responsible for the implementation of the Education programme for migrant and refugee children, youth and adults accommodated in emergency reception site(s) in North Greece. Furthermore, the teacher will ensure that all education activities are of high quality, age appropriate and in line with children, youth and adults needs. 

 

Responsibilities will include, but not necessarily be limited, to the following:  

• Implementation of non-formal education activities (Greek language and numeracy) for school age children (6 to 15), adolescents and youth (16-18) and adults. 

• Planning and realization of educational activities based on age, education background and individual needs of children, adolescents and adults. 

• Formation of educational groups and development of a schedule that is in line with needs of site population, i.e. children, adolescents as well as adults and in agreement with the relevant authorities and site management. 

• Ensuring that relevant project data (attendance lists, lesson plans) is accurately collected and updated on a weekly and monthly basis, including breakdown of age and gender. 

• Planning and coordinating distribution of teaching and learning material, including stationery and school kits. 

• Provision of information and advice to beneficiaries on existing education programs. 

• Contributing to the reinforcement of existing  communication with persons of concern throughout DRC units and promoting the right to education for all children. 

• Collaboration with DRC cultural mediators and other staff members, in order to design and implement relevant education activities as well as life skills projects. 

• Other tasks as required by the Education Team Leader to support implementation of DRC’s education program.  

 

Required Qualifications 

• At least three years of experience in education and teaching. Prior teaching experience with non-Greek speaking children and adolescents is an asset. 

• University degree in education or related filed required. 

• Experience in teaching English will be considered an asset 

• Excellent verbal and written English and Greek skills are required. 

• Driving license will be considered an asset. 

• Effective classroom management skills. 

• Previous working experience with local or international NGOs will be considered as a strong advantage. 

• High professional ethics. 

• Computer skills. 

• Ability to work with children of different cultural background, different language and special needs. 

• Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment. 

• Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, working with different groups, partners and nationalities. 

• Strong initiative and self-motivated, with a strong commitment to humanitarian principles. 

• Flexible, enthusiastic and willing to learn from others. 

• Ability to multitask and cope with multiple demands under tight deadlines. 

• Ability to cope with high workload and stress and establish priorities.  

 

The contract will be under the Greek Labor Law, and all allowances will be provided to the employees (Christmas, Easter, Vacation bonus).

The position will be based in the broader area of Thessaloniki (Greece) and national terms and conditions apply.  

 

• The employee shall follow DRC instructions on safety, confidentiality and ethical guidelines, including the Code of Conduct and the Humanitarian Accountability Framework. 

• Employee should not engage in any other paid activity during the DRC contract period without prior authorization. 

• Employee should not engage in any activity that could harm DRC or the implementation of any project during the DRC contract period. 

• Employee should not give interviews to the media or publish project-related photos or other material without prior authorization. 

• Employee shall return all borrowed equipment for the project to DRC after the end of the contract period or upon request.
