World Food Programme

Internship – Operations

Innovation and Change Management Division (INC)

Berlin, Germany

Context and background

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline humanitarian agency fighting hunger and malnutrition worldwide. With annual expenditure of about USD 4 billion raised entirely from voluntary contributions, WFP tackles poverty and hunger through a range of interventions. Each year, on average, WFP feeds more than 90 million people in more than 80 countries. Around 14,000 people work for the organization, most of them in remote areas, directly serving the hungry poor.

The Innovation and Change Management Division of WFP hosts both the Innovation Accelerator and the ShareTheMeal Initiative. ShareTheMeal is developed as the first pilot project of the WFP Innovation Accelerator, part of the Innovation and Change Management Division, which aims to combine start-up lean thinking with non-profit projects to reduce food insecurity and malnutrition. This division reports to the Chief of Staff of WFP and seeks to create value through prioritizing and better harnessing innovative ideas, as well as scaling up transformative projects to a global level.

The ShareTheMeal app was launched in 2015 and currently has more than 1 million users. The team, located in Berlin, is focused on further developing the app to include new and innovative features, and on increasing the engagement of existing users and growing the user base through marketing and communication initiatives.
