UNHRD (UN Humanitarian Response Depot) is an emergency preparedness and response tool for WFP and the wider humanitarian community. UNHRD manages six (6) strategically located hub worldwide (Panama, Ghana, Italy, Malaysia, Spain and UAE). The RRT supports the humanitarian community in sudden emergencies in cargo receipt consolidation, equipment installation and establishment and running of in-country logistics hubs. When not deployed, the team works in the LAB, which is a research and development unit that reviews, tests and helps develop innovative solutions and products for supply chain operations.

Duties and responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the UNHRD Deputy Network Coordinator and the technical supervision of the Head of the UNHRD Lab and RRT, the consultant will have the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Be available for deployment as an RRT member always at all times and within 24/48 hours upon request for an emergency response;

When deployed, the consultant is to:

  • Support WFP Supply Chain in cargo management and consolidation at main entry points/airports and staging areas to avoid congestion and protect cargo;
  • Support UNHRD partners in light construction and set up of base camps, staging areas, logistics hubs etc;
  • Support in leading the actions for maintenance, dismantling, demobilizing, disposal, reconditioning and re-packaging equipment at the end of an operation;
  • Contribute to provide training to national staff and technical assistance as necessary;
  • Support the organization of simulation training for RRT staff;
  • Act as a resource with the UNHRD LAB, testing new technology for support equipment and relief items;
  • Research and test the design of new equipment and materials with potential for use in emergency operations;
  • Provide technical advice and specifications to the humanitarian community;
  • Prepare technical specifications and follow up on tenders in support to UNHRD Procurement;
  • Prepare and maintain up to date files of the Lab;
  • Perform other duties as required.

Education/Work experience:

  • University degree in Engineering or in other related fields and particularly in one of the following disciplines: electronic, civil, environmental, biomedical, management, mechanical;
  • Experience in humanitarian emergency response is an asset
  • Minimum requirements in terms of years of experience (1 year)

Languages:

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is essential.
  • Knowledge of French is a plus
