The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization that carries out high quality, policy-relevant research on population, health and education issues facing sub-Saharan Africa. Our goal is to generate evidence for meaningful action to improve the lives of all Africans. APHRC seeks to recruit a research officer to work in the Education and Youth Empowerment Unit in our Senegal office.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Undertake literature reviews of key project areas of interest, including identifying data gaps, opportunities and priorities for action, as needed.
  • Work with project manager to undertake policy analysis on specific issues around girls’ education based on agreed framework.
  • Participate in workshops, meetings, conferences and other project relevant activities, and report on the proceedings.
  • Provide support in the day-to-day project management activities.
  • Contribute to various stakeholder engagement activities such as inception meetings and policy engagement.
  • Participate in writing scientific papers, policy briefs, factsheets and reports.
  • Mobilize and sensitize stakeholders about the research project.
  • Develop study tools, training manuals and field guides to use for data collection.
  • Coordinate the recruitment, training of field interviewers for data collection.
  • Participate in the development of research proposals.
  • Lead the process of obtaining ethical approval for research projects.
  • Prepare regular field and project reports.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Masters in any of the following areas: education, economics, sociology, population studies/demography, statistics or related discipline.
  • At least two years’ post-Masters qualification experience in a research setting.
  • Good computer literacy and knowledge of multiple statistical and/or qualitative software packages such as STATA, SPSS, NVivo or ATLAS.ti
  • Experience conducting field research and managing data collection teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in French; and fair communication skills in English.
  • Experience in engaging policy makers and key stakeholders with research evidence.
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities, juggle tasks and meet tight deadlines.
