Internship on Evaluation, Analysis and Communication, Evaluation Office, New York, USA, 6 months

Under the supervision of the Innovation staff, the intern will be able to gain valuable experience to work in the areas of: evaluation databases, data analysis, social media and communication --- with a lens of innovation to promote and apply evaluation evidence and findings. The intern will be able to learn and strengthen his/her skills in a combination of technical areas: evaluation methodologies and mixed methods analysis, database familiarity and content management, writing, editing and communication strategies, and the ability to collaborate with multiple disciplines among a highly skilled global network of professionals.

UNICEF has also been innovating for children for more than 60 years.  The work in this area is supported and integrated across several divisions at UNICEF, including the Evaluation Office.  The Evaluation Office supports the organization’s 135+ country offices in finding solutions for the world’s most vulnerable children.   The office’s new unit, ‘Innovation, Learning and Uptake’ is dedicated to enhance the use and application of UNICEF evaluation’s findings and recommendations through adopting and applying new innovations.  It engages with other UNICEF divisions that are testing and scaling new partnerships, technologies and collaborations in some of the world’s most difficult operating environments.   By doing so, UNICEF plays a key role in shaping the policy and practice of evaluation.

How can you make a difference?

The Evaluation Intern will be part of the Evaluation Office and work directly with the Innovation, Learning and Uptake Unit.  He/she will play an important part of the initial work of the unit through:

  • Attending and contributing insights and ideas to Evaluation Office regular meetings and Innovation, Learning and Uptake Unit meetings;

  • Assisting the communication and publication logistics related to knowledge management, evaluation evidence and learning;

  • Extracting data and producing analytic outputs and infographics based on evidence extracted from evaluation databases;

  • Analyzing evaluation data – cost and expenditure data across all UNICEF countries to determine disparities and trends in evaluation planning, monitoring and implementation;

  • Using data visualization techniques for presenting quantitative and qualitative findings;

  • Writing, editing and packaging analytic outputs, including newsletters for internet and intranet and social media handles;

  • Monitoring UNICEF social media presence and identifying opportunities to publish evaluation findings related to current issues.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will…

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or Ph.D programme or have graduated within the past two years.  Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Have excellent or very good academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
  • Have very good experience with Excel in analyzing quantitative data; familiarity with databases and producing analytic outputs, infographics, and charts for presentations.
  • Have experience with content management systems and tools.
  • Be able to communicate simply, clearly and effectively with excellent written and editing skills.
  • Be able to work under pressure and in a team.
  • Have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office.
  • Have no other relatives in the line of authority which the intern will report to.
  • Have fluency in English (required). Knowledge of another UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is an advantage.

Conditions

  • Individuals must have proof of medical insurance covering the time and location of their internship.
  • Selected candidates will receive a monthly stipend (unless already in receipt of any support for the internship from a third party).
  • Individuals must fund their own travel and living expenses.
  • Individuals are responsible for arranging any visa or immigration requirements.
