Contract Duration

Interns are required to work full time for a period between three and six months (to be agreed to prior to commencement). Internship placements shall not be extended beyond six months.

Organisational Context

The Division of External Operations (DEO) is responsible for and consolidates the Registry’s functions with respect to witnesses, communications, external relations and field operations. In addition to the Office of the Director (OD-DEO), DEO consists of three sections at Headquarters, namely the Victims and Witnesses Section (VWS), the Public Information and Outreach Section (PIOS) and the External Operations Support Section (EOSS) as well as field presences in several situation countries.

The OD-DEO supports the Director for External Operations, who has the overall responsibility for the Registry’s functions in the areas of cooperation, external communications, witness protection, analysis and field operations. OD-DEO also coordinates operations in the field, including the establishment and maintenance of field offices as well as mission planning.

Duties and Responsibilities
 

  • Conduct background research on a wide variety of matters to support the work of the Director for External Operations;
  • Conduct legal analysis on issues related to judicial cooperation, cooperation with the States and IGOs and operations;
  • Draft minutes of both internal and external meetings;
  • Draft letters, speaking points, speeches and other documents for the Director and other Registry officials;
  • Assist in drafting legal and policy memoranda, reports and analyses on assigned topics;
  • Assist in updating and producing content for the DEO intranet site;
  • Perform any other duties as required.

Required Qualifications

Education:

The candidate should have an academic background in political science, law, management, journalism/public information, or a related field. 

Experience:

Internship placements focus on candidates in the early stages of their professional careers therefore; practical experience is not an essential prerequisite for selection. However, practical experience that is relevant to the work of the Court, especially from an international environment, will be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to adapt to multicultural and multilingual working environments.
  • Possesses strong teamwork skills (listens, consults and communicates proactively).
  • Has acquired a good standard of computer skills (including Microsoft Office applications).

Knowledge of Languages:

Proficiency in one of the working languages of the Court, French or English, is required. Working knowledge of the other is considered an asset. Knowledge of another official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.

Remuneration
 

Please note that the ICC is not able to provide participants in the Internship and Visiting Professional Programme with remuneration, nor is it possible to provide reimbursement for any expenses incurred during the internship or Visiting Professional placement. Accordingly, applicants must have the necessary resources or other financial support for the duration of the placement for which they have been selected.

If a State Party to the Rome Statute provides a donation to the Internship Programmes Fund, it may be possible to offer a limited number of interns a stipend for cost of living and travel. If funding is available, the Human Resources Section will conduct an assessment of the candidate determining eligibility for funding in accordance with the Court’s Policy on Internships and Visiting Professionals and relevant funding conditions. In order to be eligible, the applicant must, among other criteria, be a national from a country that is a State Party to the Rome Statute and appear on the United Nations Statistics Division’s list of developing regions.

Candidates eligible for funding shall receive detailed information and further instructions after the selection process is finalized. Stipends will always be agreed at the time of offering the internship. No funding will be provided at a later stage.
