Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a Danish international non-governmental organisation, which promotes and supports durable solutions to the problems faced by refugees and internally displaced people all over the world. DRC is present in more than 30 conflict territories around the world assisting displaced people with shelter, food, income generating activities, and wide range of other assistance. It is of utmost importance for DRC to work in compliance with the DRC Accountability and Quality Management system and national legislations. Smooth, reliable and effective operational systems are preconditions for DRC to maintain its position as a trustworthy and reliable partner for our donors and an accountable organisation towards our beneficiaries.  

DRC has been operating in the West Africa region for over 15 years, running a combination of emergency, livelihood, protection and advocacy programmes through Country Offices (COs) Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria and a Regional Office (RO) in Abidjan. DRC has 17 offices and more than 500 staff members across the WA region.

DRC started operating in Nigeria in 2015 where plans to run a combination of emergency, livelihood, WASH, protection and advocacy programmes has been set. DRC currently has offices in Abuja, Yola, Mubi, Maiduguri and planning to run an office in Yobe, besides 50 staff members subject to increase in near future.

The position: Risk Education Officer

 The Risk Education Officer is responsible for the delivery of mine/ERW risk education to IDPs in assigned communities, in accordance with DDG’s approach and Standard Operating Procedures for risk education.

Reporting to: Risk Education Advisor

To achieve the overall objective, the Risk Education Officer will perform the following tasks and undertake the following responsibilities:

  • Assist the Risk Education Supervisor and manager and other senior staff in further developing educational content and methodologies, presentation materials, monitor materials, etc. suited to the needs of the target groups
  • Conduct RE sessions has required.
  • In close coordination with Risk Education Supervisor, collect data about possible location of contamination of Mines/ERW and victims of mine/ERW/IED-related accidents.
  • Deliver RE alongside other DRC/DDG activities in the communities, ensuring close coordination, collaboration and programmatic synergies
  • Submit activity records and weekly reports to the Risk Education Supervisor.
  • Provide inputs and participate in the ongoing development of education materials and methods
  • Ensure that all tasks allocated by the Risk Education Supervisor and manager are executed promptly, efficiently and in accordance with DDG operational guidelines
  • Provide inputs and participate in the ongoing development of RE training and methods.
  • Contribute to the management of safety and security by adhering to established protocols
  • Any other tasks requested by the Risk Education Project manager, Risk Education Supervisor and/or Mine Action

Key Requirements:


  • University degree in social science or tertiary education in any other relevant field will be a recommendation
  • Good English and ability to effectively communicate in the local language, speaking, reading and writing
  • Knowledge of local communities; actual inhabitants of these area are preferred
  • Proven communication, interpersonal and facilitation skills
  • Must be able to remain neutral when working with communities
  • Willing and able to work for long hours
  • Artistic capability (e.g. singing, dancing, drama, graphic design) will be considered an asset
  • Proven educational and/or training skills an advantage


  • Proven MRE knowledge is essential
  • Proven experience in addressing groups of people an advantage


Availability: 1/3/2019

Salary and conditions: In accordance with Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment;

The income will be subject to statutory deductions as per applicable Nigeria laws. The employee is responsible for the tax returns.
