Temporary Appointment: Communications Specialist (Gender at the Workplace), P-3, DHR, NYHQ, 364 Days

New York City (United States of America)

The Communications Specialist (Gender at the Workplace), working under the overall guidance and direction of the Senior Project Manager, is accountable for a timely implementation of the four elements set out in the EDGE Action Plan as well as preparation and successful re-certification of EDGE Move in 2020. S/he is responsible for implementing strategies and plans to achieve these goals.

In June, 2018, UNICEF was certified at the second level of EDGE Certification: EDGE Move putting us at the top 11% percent of EDGE certified companies. The certification recognizes UNICEF’s commitment to gender equality and inclusion at the workplace, and is one of several initiatives UNICEF has started with the goal of reaching gender parity at all levels as well as creating an inclusive work environment.

How can you make a difference?
The Communications Specialist (Gender at the Workplace), working under the overall guidance and direction of the Senior Project Manager, is accountable for a timely implementation of the four elements set out in the EDGE Action Plan as well as preparation and successful re-certification of EDGE Move in 2020. S/he is responsible for implementing strategies and plans to achieve these goals.

Summary of specific tasks:

Coordinate global communication of EDGE Action Plan in Four High-Impact Areas

  • Flexible working arrangements: Develop and implement global a communication campaign to increase uptake on flexible work options including various communication channels, adapt communications products to suit global audiences and set up measurable indicators.
  • Recruitment and promotion: Develop and implement a communication strategy to improve the effectiveness of existing efforts to convey promotion process and promotion criteria; Measure communications efforts against measurable indicators.
  • Mentoring initiatives: Support the development and implementation of a global mentorship programme in partnership with relevant stakeholders through research on best practices.
  • Gender pay gap: Support the development of a yearly gender pay gap assessment and develop and implement a communication plan to disseminate findings among different audiences.

Support the EDGE Move Re-Certification Process

  • Develop Communication Plan for Re-Certification; Distill lessons learned from first year and apply them to the Communication Plan for Re-Certification.
  • Support the implementation of EDGE Analysis.

Support the mainstreaming of gender diversity in HR initiatives

  • Conduct research on best practices on gender diversity in HR in different industries and countries;
  • Conduct a gender-sensitive review of HR policies and put forward recommendations for improvement;
  • Design and manage agenda of Sounding Board meetings on gender and HR;
  • Maintain solid communication mechanisms with main partners and stakeholders, including Gender Push, the Global Staff Association, the Gender Unit and Gender Regional Advisers.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An advanced university degree in one of the following fields is required: gender studies, human resources, psychology, international relations, or another relevant social science field
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively relevant work experience, ideally in the area of communications, gender or another relevant field.
  • Excellent communication, graphic design, content management and writing skills.
  • Influencing and partnering skills.
  • Experience in managing communication campaigns for diverse audiences is an asset.
  • Experience with the UN system is an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in French or Spanish is an asset.
