Background

CORPORATE BACKGROUND:

UNDP works in about 170 countries and territories, helping to achieve the eradication of poverty, and the reduction of inequalities and exclusion. INTERNSHIP OFFICE BACKGROUND:

The Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) has the responsibility for developing all relevant policy and guidance to support the results of UNDP's Strategic Plan. BPPS's staff provides technical advice to Country Offices; advocates for UNDP corporate messages, represents UNDP at multi-stakeholder for including public-private dialogues, government and civil society dialogues, South-South and triangular cooperation initiatives, and engages in UN inter-agency coordination in specific thematic areas.

As the UN system's development program and a GEF Implementing Agency since 1991,UNDP also supports countries in addressing development, climate, and ecosystem sustainability in an integrated manner. UNDP's Global Environmental Finance Team offers countries highly specialized technical services for eligibility assessment, program/project formulation, due diligence, mobilization of required co-financing, project implementation oversight, results management and evaluation, performance -based payments and knowledge management .

With financing from the Global Environment Facility's (GEF) Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) and Special Climate Change Fund, Adaptation Fund, Green Climate Fund, and donor Governments of Germany, Japan and other, UNDP, together with a number of partners is providing assistance to countries to integrate climate change into their national and sectoral planning and budgeting processes and design and implement priority adaptation interventions. Within this overall background, UNDP is seeking to engage interns to support different evidence based policy making research to the countries that includes data analysis and data science. This terms of reference also contributes to work planned to support countries on integrating climate risk into planning and budgeting through the BMUB funded "Integrating Agriculture into National Adaptation Plans programme".

Within this overall background, UNDP is seeking the support of interns and research collaborators to provide support to advance this technical workstream on impact evaluation and data analysis.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will assist in the following duties and responsibilities:

Interns will be part of the team of researchers that will be working towards evidence-based policy making in the climate change adaptation unit of UNDP. Primary responsibilities will include cleaning and analyzing survey data from the countries and developing impact evaluation models to understand project effectiveness. In some cases, interns can be placed in a country or regional office of UNDP to support data collection activities and analysis. There will be opportunity to collaborate on the student’s dissertation.

The successful candidate will be under the direct supervision of UNDP Senior Economist and work closely with the head, Climate change adaptation and program manager for UNDP’s NAP-GSP.

Research Support

  • Provide general research support related to survey methods and analytics on assignments of low to moderate complexity.
  • Updates and checks existing databanks; assembles, consolidates, and checks data from new sources.
  • Conduct literature reviews, statistical analysis of primary and secondary data and prepares memos, tables, and graphs based on findings under supervision of experienced professionals.

Research Analysis

  • Develop project materials, such as report outlines, visual exhibits for reports, and serving as an editor for deliverables.
  • Interns in economics related fields will be expected to perform complex data analyses using STATA, MATLAB, R, or other statistical software package
  • Interns in data science related field including GIS will be expected to be proficient in softwares related to spatial analysis including GIS

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements:

  1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  3. Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (1) and (2) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Field of study: economics, statistics, mathematics, Data science, GIS, social science, or computer science or equivalent.

IT skills:

  • Knowledge and a proficient user of Microsoft Office productivity tools;
  • Academic or work experience performing data analysis using various softwares including MATLAB, STATA, and GIS

Language skills:

  • English required;
  • Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage.

INTERNSHIP CONDITIONS

  • UNDP internships are not remunerated. All expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern or her/his sponsoring entity;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • Interns are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;
  • Interns must provide proof of enrolment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
  • Interns are expected to work full time but flexibility is allowed for education programmes;
  • Interns need to obtain financing for subsistence and make own arrangements for internship, travel, VISA, accommodation, etc.

NOTE: If selected for the position, interns are requested to provide a letter from university confirming current enrollment and graduation date, a copy of school transcript, a letter of endorsement from professor, a medical certificate of good health, a copy of medical insurance coverage during internship assignment in Thailand, and a copy of passport.
