UNICEF, CP AoR and UNHCR developed the Child Protection Training in collaboration with Standby Partners (SBP) in response to the rapid changes that have occurred in the sector over the last years. There has been a significant increase in demand for child protection deployments to support UNICEF and UNHCR operations in emergencies, and a consequent need to provide deployees with tailored training. The aim of this course is to enhance participants’ knowledge on child protection in humanitarian action (CPHA) and to provide an opportunity to develop and practice a range of core competencies identified as crucial for UNICEF and UNHCR Child Protection deployees. In 2019 the training will take place 1 – 6 April 2019 and will be hosted by hosted by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and will take place in Switzerland at the Hotel Schloss Training Center in Gerzensee, outside of Bern. For coordinating the five-day UNICEF training, a dedicated consultant is required. This consultant will review a few aspects prior to the training and will run the training in April as a lead trainer. Other trainers will be identified shortly.

Supervision

The Consultant reports to and cooperates closely with the Standby Team, EMOPS CP AoR and UNHCR CP Training Team members and is supervised by the Emergency Specialist, Standby Arrangements IA&HP EMOPS Geneva.  

Deliverables

The Consultant is expected to deliver the following:

Pre Training Preparation (8 days):

  • Review last year’s evaluations by trainers and participants as well as recommendations.
  • Ensure standardization of modules is complete incorporating 2017 updates and any further updates identified by the training team of recently released guidance/materials.
  • Adapt the previously developed evaluations prior course as needed based on trainer feedback.
  • Working with identified experts within UNICEF, ensure that latest policy and guidance on PSEA is integrated into the training (lesson plans, outcomes, training materials etc).
  • Conduct a call with trainers to agree on division of sessions.
  • Review the participant pre-course survey and assessment.
  • Conduct the pre-course liaison with the identified participants and venue, including sending of pre course work and survey, logistical information and management of participant communications.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education

  • Advanced university degree in one or more of the following disciplines: economics, international affairs, nutrition/health, agriculture, environmental sciences, social sciences or a field relevant to humanitarian assistance.

Experience

  • At least five years of postgraduate progressively responsible professional experience in developing training, public sector management, development and/or humanitarian projects, operational analysis, crisis management or emergency assistance.
  • Previous experience in developing training and/or inter-agency simulation exercises.
  • Knowledge of the Transformative Agenda and the Cluster System.
  • Familiarity with emergency preparedness planning at agency and/or inter-agency level.
  • Experience as a Standby Deployee is an asset.

Technical skills

  • Strong knowledge of training methodology, course design and evaluation
  • Capacity to lead and facilitate training events and deliver training content

Personal skills

  • Capacity to establish and maintain productive relations with a range of actors from different national and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports and communicate effectively.
  • Sound analytical skills and a constructive approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to advise others.
  • Ability to manage her/himself and others.
  • Ability to deliver outputs by agreed deadlines – sometimes at very short notice.

 

*Payment will be made upon satisfactory completion of all deliverables, after receipt of an invoice, and paid as a lump sum on end of the assignment.*
