OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Implementing the United Nations Political Declaration (UNPD) on NCD is one of the five priority strategic programs of the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean. Addressing NCD, specifically the four priority groups of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases and their risk factors, requires reorientation and strengthening of health systems to deal more effectively with early detection, effective and prompt treatment, management of complications, and palliative care for people with advanced manifestations of NCD. In countries with complex emergencies, maintaining an adequate level of management of NCD needs particular attention in light of interrupted access to health care and essential medicines and the pressure of competing pressing priorities.

The objectives of the NCD management programme are\:

--> Assess and monitor the current situation of the health system response to NCD.

--> Implement a strategic approach for strengthening the health system response to NCD in Member States with a focus on improving integration and management of common NCD in primary health care (PHC).

--> Monitor and evaluate national NCD management programmes and specifically integration and management of common NCD in PHC.

--> Support Member States to strengthen the health system response to NCD in complex emergencies through PHC.
