Background

Unit/Project BackgroundUnder the direct supervision and guidance of the Partnerships Specialist, the intern will assist the Resource Mobilization’s Public Partnerships Team. A work plan with achievements for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon. This internship will be for up to six months.

UN Women BackgroundUN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Strategic Partnerships Division (SPD) is responsible for proactively driving the positioning of UN Women so that the size, sources and predictability of its resources help the organization achieve its strategic goals. A service centre to UN Women HQ Divisions and Field Offices, SPD is organized into functional clusters, comprising: Resource Mobilization (RM) (including Liaison Offices) and Communications and Advocacy. Given the scope and inter-relationships of SPD’s functional responsibilities, the work of SPD is highly synergistic, involving constant and direct interaction and information-sharing among team members, to provide high quality advice, services and support to UN Women.

Within the Strategic Partnerships Division, the Resource Mobilization branch:

•           maintains and enhances donor relations, to strengthen implementation of the UN Women Resource Mobilization Strategy;

•           supports compliance with obligations to donors and other partners, enhancing general institutional accountability; and

•           helps to emphasize the value of funding partnerships and donor contributions.

Duties and Responsibilities

Learning Objectives:

  • By the end of the internship the interns should have a good working knowledge of the resource mobilization function of UN Women as well as a clear understanding of the relationship building with partners and clients.
  • At the end of the internship interns should have a better understanding of the complex functions and dynamics of an international organization working in the development sector, and its impact in the UN System as well as at the national and regional levels.
  • The intern should leave with better technical knowledge of the creation and design of products for both internal and external distribution.
  • The interns should leave with an improved understanding of gender equality and women’s empowerment and how UN Women’s work is changing global perspectives about these areas.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide support to Emerging Partners Focal Points on the management of their portfolio and to the core resources campaign in securing and following up pledges and contributions, including the preparation of acknowledgement and payment request letters, mission visit and outreach to Member States.
  • Support in research and analysis in relation to emerging donors, and drafting of documents including briefing notes, background notes/talking points and note to files for bilateral meetings and team meetings, preparation of official correspondence in strengthening strategic engagement.
  • Assist the preparation of UN Women regional briefings and other events and engagements with Member States, particularly with emerging partners.
  • Support the team in uploading documents on the UN Women intranet, preparing inputs for uploading to the internet and relevant briefing materials, updating the database of government counterparts in New York and in the field, and outreach to Member States, including drafting correspondence.
  • Support UN Women info session/briefing events with external groups of local and international students, researchers and diplomats through Permanent Missions, at UN Women Headquarters throughout the year. 
  • Assist in logistical and operational support and provide other assistance as identified during the internship period.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • The intern must have studied International Relations, Political Science, Communications or other similar subject at the university level.
  • The intern must either be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent) or has graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required; Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is preferred.

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.
