Software Engineer

1.   Organizational Context
 
 a.   Organizational Setting

 

The position is located in the Brands and Designs Database Section of the Global Database Division, Global Infrastructure Sector. The Section is responsible for the WIPO Global Brand Database and Global Design Database which include millions of records from the collections of Madrid, Lisbon, Hague and Paris 6ter emblems and from an expanding number of national collections contributed by IP Offices with whom cooperation agreements have been reached.  These databases offer advanced Trademark and Industrial Designs search functions to the public, are used by thousands of users daily and are essential components of WIPO’s Global IP Infrastructure on the internet.

 

 

b.  Purpose Statement

 

The incumbent will coordinate the trained neural models generated by the Advanced Technology Applications Center (ATAC) team and the lucene-based search engines of the Global Brand and Design Databases to apply machine learning to lucene’s internal ranking algorithms.

 

 

c.  Reporting Lines

 

The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Head of the Global Brand and Designs Section

 

 

d.   Work Relations

 

The incumbent will work in close collaboration with ATAC colleagues.

 

  

2.     Duties and Responsibilities
 
The incumbent will perform the following principal duties\:
 
a.   Manage the integration of image classification neural models with Solr or ElasticSearch based search engine to support next-generation image similarity searching and ranking algorithm for Trademark images.
 
b.   Take ownership of Global Brand and Design search schemas and propose ways to improve and optimize overall performance.
 
c.   Study and propose solutions for image similarity search for Industrial Designs.
 
d.   Define and extract data training sets using large amounts of data in varying structures and/or storage formats.
 
e.   Cooperate with the ATAC team to develop new ideas for new or improved machine learning algorithms and assist in the development of proof of concept prototypes.
 
f.    Keep abreast of new tools and techniques and propose innovative technologies and approaches to help optimize the search experience
 
g.   Perform other related tasks as required.
 
 
3.     Requirements
  
Education (Essential)
First-level university degree in Information Technology. An advanced university degree in a relevant discipline may be accepted in lieu of two years of experience.
 
Experience (Essential)
At least six years of relevant experience in working with lucene-based search engines.
 
Experience (Desirable)
Ease in working with multi-lingual search engines.
Experience in applying AI to search engine internal ranking algorithm.
Experience in image low-level features extraction for the purpose of measuring image similarity
 
Language (Essential)
Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
 
Language (Desirable)
Ability to work in other UN official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) would be an advantage.
 
Job Related Competencies (Essential)
Good knowledge of machine learning techniques.
Strong software development skills in Java.
Higher level scripting languages such as Python, Perl or the like.
Capable of working on a NIX command line and reading/writing Bash.
 
Job Related Competencies (Desirable)
Good knowledge of image processing techniques (smoothing, edge detection, etc.).
Experience in High Performance Parallel computing with Python.
Strong problem-solving and communication skills and enjoys a collaborative environment.
Ability to write user guide, administration documentation and reports in English.
Neural Networks frameworks\: (Pytorch, TensorFlow, Keras).
Internet technologies including Lucene (Solr / ElasticSearch), LIRE, JQuery, Angular.js, JavaScript, Tomcat as well as UI design CSS, HTML, HTML 5 and related technologies.
Experience with software development and deployment (version control systems\: SVN, GIT), usage of virtual machines, cloud servers, containerization (Docker, openshift).
Knowledge of IP information tools, products and standards.

5. Information
 
Annual salary\:
 
Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  The post adjustment (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change without notice in accordance with the rates as set within the UN Common System for salaries and allowances.  The figures quoted below are based on the February 2019 rate of 67.7%

Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations (not applicable for the External Offices).

Temporary appointments are renewable, subject to continuing needs, availability of budget and satisfactory performance with a maximum cumulative length of two years.
