Background

DRC has been providing relief and development services in the Horn of Africa since 1997. Using a human rights framework, the DRC Somalia operations focuses mainly on people who are affected by displacement, including refugees, internally displaced, and migrant.

Danish Demining Group (DDG) is a specialized unit within DRC which implements mine action and armed violence reduction (AVR) programmes. DDG’s mandate is ‘to create a safe environment free from armed violence and the remnants of conflict’, and DDG does this via a programmatic focus on four key sectors: Security Systems Reform, Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) management, Mine Action and Conflict Management.

Overall Purpose of the role:

The main objective is to provide interpretation, translation and cross-cultural support for recently arrived refugees from Middle East who will be provided with health services at Hargeisa group hospital.                                                         

Responsibilities:

  • Liaise with and support the doctors and medical officers in the hospital in the implementation of their duties and provide interpretation, translation and cross-cultural understanding support to the medical team as they assist the refugees during their duties.
  • Provide high quality interpretation and translation from Arabic to Somali and from Somali to Arabic to the Arabic speaking refugees and doctors at the hospital;
  • Accompany the patients to the doctors and other various appointments
  • Assist refugees in completing medical forms, registration forms & follow up where necessary.
  • Maintenance of records of appointments, and assist the doctors in assessing and monitoring the ongoing needs of the refugees.
  • Record issues arising, responses, gaps, challenges both for the service providers and the refugees, and the solutions for future learning.

Education, experience & technical competencies

  • High school certificate, degree/diploma in nursing or social science or any other relevant field
  • An excellent understanding of the skills needed for professional interpretation.
  • Excellent command of English and Arabic, both written and oral.

  • Some knowledge of medical will be an asset
  •  
  • Arabic fluency is a must
  • English fluency is desirable

Conditions

Availability:         22nd April -2019

Duty station:     Hargeisa

Reporting to:     Project Team Leader - Health

Duration:          8 Month and 9 Days contract.

Contract:          This position is graded as G6 (NM-I) for qualified national staff and the terms of employment will be in accordance with DRC terms for national staff.
