Honiara (Solomon Islands)
he “Empowering Youth as agents for Peace and Social Cohesion in SI” YPB project is jointly implemented by the International Labour Organization [ILO] and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
In support of the recently launched National Youth Policy, the project will endeavor to empower marginalized young Solomon Islanders, particularly young women, both to engage in decision-making and as pro-active social entrepreneurs to address local sources of grievances.
The project will engage peacebuilding efforts in a new direction, and into new locations that have traditionally been beyond the reach of development efforts and government services to help nurture a new generation of effective peace advocates and nation builders. Effort will focus on improving youth agency in the issues identified by existing peacebuilding work as the root causes of tensions, including: land disputes, corruption/integrity, environment and resource management, social cohesion, access to livelihoods, and public services. Through this, the project will work to address the marginalization of young people in the decision-making process that both undermines their ability to make contributions to the peace- and nation-building process and contributes to the frustration that may lead to resentment of the status quo.
The key implementing partners of the project are Ministry of Traditional Governance, Peace, and Ecclesiastical Affairs (MTGPEA); Ministry of Women, Youth, Children, and Family Affairs (MWYCFA); Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry/Young Entrepreneurs’ Council; Solomon Islands Women in Business Association; and World Vision Solomon Islands.
Working with youth has always been a focus of the UN’s peacebuilding work in the country.
Under the guidance and supervision of the Project Manager (PM), the PA will work with the UNDP and UN ILO Project team as well as external implementing partners in organizing meetings, travel and logistical support to ensure the project activities are delivered as per workplan.
