ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT

The Language Services Unit (LSU) forms part of the Services Section providing critical, close support functions to the Office of the Prosecutor in order for it to fulfil its mandate. In this respect, during the preliminary examination, investigation, and prosecution phases, the Unit provides field, event, and telephone interpretation; transcription of audio and video material; translation of OTP evidence and core Office documentation; as well as other services requiring language expertise, such as summary translation, redacting, and editing.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent of the post will work in the Language Services Unit of the Office of the Prosecutor reporting to the Language Coordinator. He or she will work in a demanding and high-pressure but rewarding environment. The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Revise translations from Arabic into English and English into Arabic produced by staff translators, contractual translators or external freelancers, dealing with a wide range of technical subjects often requiring considerable specialization;
  • On occasion, provide self-revised translations, especially of critical, complex, or urgent texts;
  • Manage the timely provision of fit-for-purpose translation services in support of OTP operations, with responsibility for the direct supervision and activities of the Arabic translation team and administrative support, and for coordination with client units to forecast and deliver on needs in a timely manner;
  • Source, test and select freelance and staff translators to meet the OTP’s Arabic-language needs;
  • Implement quality assurance for Arabic-language target texts of translations from Situation languages;
  • Carry out linguistic research, identifying, preparing and approving new terminology and glossary entries;
  • Update and develop translation guidelines, procedures and workflows, and monitor workload levels, making budget and human resources recommendations;
  • Perform other related duties as required.


ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS


Education:

Advanced university degree in translation, languages, linguistics or any other related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience is accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree;


Experience:

A minimum of seven (7) years (nine (9) years with a first-level university degree) of relevant work experience as a translator, reviser, editor or in any other relevant area of work, preferably in an international organisation, is required;

KNOWLEDGE OF LANGUAGES

Mother-tongue proficiency in English and a high level of proficiency in Arabic or vice versa is required. Proficiency in French, the other working language of the Court, would be considered an asset. Knowledge of another official language of the Court (Chinese, Russian, Spanish) or a Situation language would be considered an asset.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to take a written test.  Candidates who have indicated proficiency in French may also be invited to take an optional test in French.
