The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an African-led and Africa-based international research institute committed to conducting high quality and policy-relevant multidisciplinary research. Our researchers address important development issues and challenges facing sub-Saharan Africa in areas such as education, population, health, aging, urbanization and wellbeing. Our goal is to generate evidence for meaningful action, engage with policy makers in the region to disseminate our research findings, influence policy decisions and improve the quality of life in Africa. The APHRC seeks to recruit a Post-doctoral Research Fellow with expertise in education issues to work in the Education and Youth Empowerment Unit within APHRC’s Senegal office.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Lead and contribute to proposal development and fundraising for research projects in the Unit;
  2. Participate in the design of scientific research and training tasks within the Unit;
  3. Lead and contribute to the implementation of education and / or youth empowerment -related projects. Tasks include project design and activities related to project management such as field work and data management;
  4. Oversee data quality and analyses;
  5. Contribute to scientific writing, and production of donor reports; and,
  6. Lead in policy engagement and dissemination of research findings to appropriate audiences.

Qualifications and experience:

  1. PhD in Educational Psychology, Sociology of Education, Education Administration, Education Management, Economics of Education, Comparative Education, Special Education, and Policy Studies with a focus on education or any other related discipline;
  2. Experience working in a research institution, conducting research, leading research programs or managing research projects;
  3. Strong proposal writing skills with a good track record of winning research grants is desirable;
  4. Good quantitative skills, with extensive familiarity with statistical packages (e.g. STATA, SPSS or SAS);
  5. Excellent scientific writing skills and a good record of publications on relevant areas in sub-Saharan Africa; and
  6. Experience working with interventions related to girls’ education or incorporating a gender dimension will be an added advantage.

Desirable:

  1. Experience and familiarity with a diverse set of social science data sets;
  2. Expertise in qualitative methods, including familiarity with qualitative analysis software packages (e.g. NVivo);
  3. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work in a culturally diverse team;
  4. Ability to competently use both English and French languages; and
  5. Knowledge of the educational system in Francophone West Africa

The fellowship should be taken up within two years of completion of a doctoral degree. This fellowship comes with an attractive, internationally competitive remuneration package including employer-paid medical, travel and life insurance cover. Allowances toward in-relocation (for those recruited from outside Senegal), and dependents’ education are provided. Preference will be given to nationals of sub-Saharan African countries, and females are particularly encouraged to apply.
