Job Description

Short-Term Internship in a Software Development team for physics experiments

Are you a student in a technical or scientific field, looking for an internship to apply your knowledge and get practical experience? Join us in the collaborative, knowledge-sharing and international environment of CERN, for a period of 5 to 6 months, and contribute to the optimisation of software used by over 20,000 physicists around the globe.

If you have some knowledge of programming, and are keen to collaborate with experienced programmers on optimising a program used around the globe to analyse, visualise and store about one Exabyte of high energy physics data, hesitate no longer and apply! In function of your competencies and interests, you could contribute by:

  • Improving the builds of this software, for instance using newest C++ compilers or by testing its web-based graphics system.
  • Collecting and applying analysis patterns for meaningful and relevant benchmarks.


In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You are a full-time student at undergraduate (post-secondary) or graduate level (doctoral students are not eligible).
  • You are residing in France or Switzerland .
  • You are at least 18 years of age.
  • You have full insurance cover valid in the Geneva area for medical expenses, work and private accidents.
  • Your main field of study is in the scientific, engineering or technical field.
  • You have knowledge of programming.
  • Your work at CERN is an obligatory or recommended part of your studies.
  • You will be returning to your educational establishment after completion of your stay at CERN.
  • You have basic knowledge of English.

Important information for you to know:

  • The appointment will be for a minimum duration of five months and a maximum duration of six months.

  • The internship position will take place in 2019. Your exact start date will be defined with you in line with the possibilities offered by your educational establishment.

  • You will receive a monthly allowance of 1510 Swiss Francs. Please note, however, that the cost of living in Geneva is high and this allowance is just a complement. You should have adequate financial resources to support yourself in the local area.
