Your team

Within the Directorate Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre,  the Human-Machine Interface and Surveillance Data Processing (HMI-SDP) team, part of the MUAC/ENG/ATS Unit, is responsible for the maintenance and evolution of HMI related software products as wel as Surveillance related products and services. In addition, it provides resources to various projects in its area of expertise.

Your role

Your role will be to:



  • Design, develop and maintain safety related software systems used in MASUAC in order to ensure a consistent level of operational availability and safety, and operational functionality;

  • Maintain and develop the software of the Controller Working Position products as used in the different systems at MASUAC;

  • Analyse the technical and operational problem reports, determine the diagnostics and fix for the problems;

  • Analyse Change Proposals, including rapid prototyping, resulting in lifecycle document changes, safety assessments, test scoping and effort estimation;

  • Implement changes, and bug fixes, including demonstration, documentation and unit testing;

  • Participate in and give support to subsystems and system integration and testing;

  • Support projects and also manage work packages;

  • Coach and train other engineers on relevant technical matters;

  • Participate to the coordination of the internal and external interfaces of the CWP systems;

  • Participate in working groups and studies, whenever required;

  • Write technical documentation and reports;

  • Apply the Quality and Safety Management system;

  • Establish, maintain and adhere to processes that protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the IT systems within scope, to the standards defined in applicable security policies;

  • Perform any other task in line with the main purpose of the job.

Required qualifications, experience & competencies


  • Post-secondary education attested by a diploma (i.e. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) or secondary education attested by a diploma giving access to post-secondary education with at least 3 years of relevant working experience; a degree in computer science would be an asset

  • Internal candidates should check on the intranet to see what level of in-house experience is considered equivalent to educational qualifications where appropriate - Check on the intranet what level of in-house experience is required to compensate for any lack of educational qualifications

  • In addition to the above, minimum 3 years of relevant working experience

  • Experience in Human-Machine Interface (HMI) construction

  • Understanding of ATM systems and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) in ATM; knowledge of Future ATM Concepts

  • Proficiency in Object Oriented Technology, in particular C/C++ programming language

  • Understanding of Java programming language would be an asset

  • Skilful in using Linux/Unix and scripting languages such as Tcl/Tk and Python

  • Technical documentation writing skills

  • If an external candidate is selected, he/she will be offered an appointment for an undetermined period. Before being established in the post, the external candidate will be required to provide certified copies of his/her degrees and successfully serve a probationary period of 9 months.

  • The successful candidate shall be appointed at the grade in the function group and to the type of post indicated in the vacancy notice, or, if a group of grades has been published, in principle at the basic grade.
