Background

The Resident Coordinator (RC) system encompasses all organizations of the United Nations system dealing with operational activities for development, regardless of their formal presence in the country. The RC system in Kuwait aims to bring together the different UN agencies to contribute to the realization of New Kuwait Vision 2035 by aligning results to Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2030 at the country level. The Resident Coordinator lead the UN country team and is the designated representatives of the Secretary-General for development operations. Working closely in partnership with Kuwait governments, the Resident Coordinator and country team advocate the interests and mandates of the UN drawing on the support and guidance of the entire UN family.

The web and mobile application design internship are for six months.The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours/week) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities

As part of efforts to sharpen its advocacy, the Communication Group of the United Nations in Kuwait is in the process of revamping its outreach and communication strategy of which establishing a world class One UN website is an imperative as well as a one UN Service mobile application for UN Back office and One UN Business operations.

The Web design Intern is expected to support the development and to identify the best possible architecture for SSPRC website and assist in the development and implementation of all elements of the front-end user interface for several web-based initiatives.The Web Design Intern is not required to develop the content of the website but will receive this material from the Executive Associate.

The work will be undertaken under the supervision of the Executive and Knowledge Associate  and in close collaboration with relevant team members in the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office.The Web design Intern will work closely with Resident Coordinator Office staff and Communication Group Members and will:

  • Collect web content including text and high-quality photos;
  • Support in the creation of HTML documents and graphics for implementation in the Web;
  • Assist in the development of web pages in CMS;
  • The intern will work full time, based in at the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office. Office space and limited Information Technology and logistical support will be provided;
  • Integrate social media (YouTube, Facebook &Twitter).
  • The web design and mobile apps intern will assist in providing the following:
  • A brief report on consultations of audience and team members of the site, in terms of expectations and feasibility, and type of information to be provided
  • Several alternatives, for discussion among staff, of a revamped website for United Nations in Kuwait. This is to include the estimated effort required for content management, updates, facilitation of forums, possible integration of social media tools, etc.;
  • Support in the preparation of a fully functional PowerPoint version of how the web will look like (in terms of visitor's use, hierarchy of the content, etc.);
  • Contribute in the refinement of architecture and design following inputs from staff and identified users;
  • Assist in the preparation of a 'management/maintenance schedule', discussed and approved by The UN Resident Coordinator;
  • Take part in a properly designed and well-coordinated web site with browser compatibility (Firefox, Internet, Explorer, Chrome, Safari, Opera) and suggested options for annual hosting services.

The Intern will use their own laptop and cell phone.

Required Skills and Experience

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; 
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

Excellent writing and communication skills in English and Arabic are required. Working knowledge of other UN official languages is desirable.

  • Interns are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the duration of their internship with UNDP and must provide a medical certificate of good health prior to starting the internship. UNDP will not reimburse the medical insurance of the intern. Any costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship assignment will be the responsibility of the intern.
  • Applicants for internships must show proof of valid medical insurance for the duty station in which they will intern. For applicants, which are neither nationals or residents of the duty station, the insurance must include adequate coverage in the event of an injury or illness during the internship duration which:
  • Requires transportation to the home country or country of residence for further treatment;
