What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose

The Private fundraising Expert from defines and oversees the fundraising strategy, action plans and implementation of ICRC’s engagement with private players, from individuals, foundations and corporates.

S/he does so in collaboration with experts in the Resource Mobilization (REM) division (advisors and support functions), and in close coordination with the Red Cross Societies of the countries in question.

Together with her/his core and extended team, s/he covers the markets of Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein and reports to the Regional Head of Resource Mobilization (Head of Market) for these same countries.

Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

  • S/he manages and supervises the market’s private fundraising team.
  • S/he prepares yearly plans of actions and related budgets and monitors expenditures, implementation and performance.
  • S/he oversees the relationship managers in charge of key strategic private sector partnership files including the Corporate Support Group members and key foundations.
  • S/he is responsible for strategically important files with key donors and represents the ICRC at external higher level meetings. In collaboration with other private fundraising experts in the division, s/he takes the lead in prospecting and partnership negotiations.
  • S/he contributes to making the ICRC compliant with current data protection laws and regulations.
  • S/he replaces the Head of Market in his/her absence and contributes to the supervision and evaluation of colleagues of the extended market team.
  • S/he is a focal point for other internal stakeholders on fundraising from private sources in the concerned markets.

Strategic thinking

  • S/he understands trends and opportunities for private fundraising in the relevant markets, and works closely with other private fundraising experts in the Division to link local trends and needs with global trends and analysis.
  • S/he defines and enacts the ICRC’s fundraising market strategy from private sources in close cooperation and coordination with relevant colleagues in the division, also taking into account other division’s viewpoints and expertise (e.g.Communications, Operations).
  • S/He oversees the implementation and adoption of a new customer relationship management system by his core and extended team
  • S/he shapes in close collaboration with the relevant units the data segmentation and collection, as well as the insights into ICRC donors’ motivation and behaviours.
  • S/he is a key contributor in shaping the donor journey and the donor experience across the markets. In this regard, s/he teams up with the data, business intelligence and customer care units.
  • S/he makes sure that what is proposed to donors in terms of funding proposals and reporting is cost effective and can be delivered, taking into account and understanding ICRC modus operandi and operations, as well as available data and statistics. Where necessary, this includes challenging status quo structures and processes.

Cooperation with the RCRC Movement / National Societies

  • S/he communicates and coordinates with relevant Red Cross National Societies for the definition and implementation of the fundraising strategy in their respective markets. 
  • S/he ensures that the ICRC capitalizes on the links between government, private and National Society donors.  
  • In collaboration with the experts of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement Mobilization division and Individual Giving Development unit, s/he helps relevant National Societies to mobilize resources from private sources to support the ICRC.

Relationships

- Internally, s/he interacts with operational teams and experts (communication, water and habitat, health, protection, etc.), with ICRC delegations in the field.


- Externally, s/he interacts with Red Cross Societies and private donors in the fulfilment of her/his tasks and objectives. When and where needed s/he also engages at working level with the Permanent Missions of Geneva (counsellor, first secretary), as well as with relevant interlocutors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other ministries/agencies of interest at the capital level.

Certifications / Education required

- University degree (BA and/or MA), preferably in marketing, business administration, business management, or social science

- Fluent in German, French and English. Any other language an asset.

- Computer proficiency

Professional Experience required

- 10 years’ experience in private fundraising in Switzerland, minimum five years in a management position

- Proven experience in handling a large-size budget

- Proven experience in market analysis and strategy drafting

- Practical knowledge in data management and Customer Relationships Management (CRM).
- Exposure to and understanding of humanitarian / development organizations.
