OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

To collaborate with and assist the Government of Indonesia in prevention, control and/or elimination and eradication of neglected tropical diseases, Malaria and other vector borne diseases, by providing strategic leadership, engaging in partnerships and shaping the research agenda towards strengthening the capacity of the national programme to reduce the disease burden.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the direct supervision of Medical Officer (Communicable Diseases) and overall guidance from the WHO Representative, the incumbent will be responsible for the following\:

1.  Provide technical strategic advice and programmatic support for the national action plan towards prevention, control and/or elimination of a cluster of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) comprising dengue, leprosy, yaws, lymphatic filariasis, soil-transmitted helminthic infection, schistosomiasis and other tropical diseases in collaboration with stakeholders.

2.  Provide technical strategic advice to the Government of Indonesia in the implementation of WHO collaborative programme related to NTDs, Malaria and other vector-borne disease control programme activities.

3.  Monitor trends and analyze periodically the results obtained from the national and sub-national programmes and prepare draft reports of these results for publication in appropriate scientific media.

4.  Develop specific plans of action in consultation with the national authorities and WHO Regional Office to target those neglected tropical diseases that are prevalent at the national and sub-national levels and considered public health problems.

5.  Provide support for capacity building at national and subnational levels in the areas of neglected tropical disease surveillance, prevention, control and/or elimination using multi-disease and inter-programmatic approaches.

6. Provide strategic support and guidance in Malaria, and other communicable diseases as part of larger CDS team, as necessary.

7.  Provide technical cooperation in establishing network of academic and public health specialists for planning, implementation, surveillance, operational research and evaluation activities addressing priority neglected tropical diseases, Malaria and other vector borne diseases.

8.  Ensure systematic utilization of resources and comprehensive development of study, research and analytical capacities required for the control of neglected tropical diseases.

9.  Facilitate multi-sectoral collaboration and resource mobilization (including preparing proposals, project profiles, etc.) in support of the national effort on neglected tropical diseases(NTDs), Malaria and other vector borne diseases.

10.  Perform other related duties, as assigned by supervisor or WHO Representative.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential\: Advanced degree in medicine, infectious/tropical diseases or public health from recognized institution.

Desirable\: Training in epidemiology and/or public health or vector control methods. Advance training in NTD and/or operational research.

Experience

Essential\: At least seven years of relevant experience, some of which should have been obtained in an international context, in the development and implementation of public health programmes with a focus on controlling or eliminating NTDs.

Desirable\: Previous experience working for a UN agency or international organization.

Skills

- Thorough knowledge of WHO programme policies, principles and practices of a wide range of public health issues and sound knowledge of priority communicable diseases. 
-  Excellent communication, advocacy and negotiation skills. 
-  Experience in conducting health situation analysis, project management. 
-  Technical expertise and overall attitude at work are also mandatory competencies.

Other Skills (eg. IT)\: Proficient in MS Office Software applications, data analysis and technical presentations.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 72,637 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 1955 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
