What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Your role

As an anaesthetist, you are part of the ICRC hospital team, you perform safe pre/per and post-anaesthesia procedures for emergency and elective surgical interventions, often for the benefit of trauma and weapon-wounded individuals. You work in assisted or ICRC independent hospital structures, often in limited/low resources settings and challenging security environment. You are part of the ICRC mobile surgical team deployed to operational contexts when required. 

Main responsibilities

  • Perform anaesthesia during surgical interventions, in line with the internationally  & ICRC recognized standards, and provide adequate patient post-operative care
  • Organize, coordinate and ensure that all required resources are available to conduct safe anaesthesia procedures
  • With the other members of the ICRC surgical team, provides technical advice and supports local counterparts to maintain/develop the local capacities and reach international standards
  • In the case of field deployment, participates and ensures the availability of all necessary materials, drugs, and consumables to perform safe anaesthesia during emergencies

Education and experience required

  • Strongly motivated by humanitarian work
  • Degree in Medicine and a specialization in Anesthesia
  • A valid licence to practise in your country of residence
  • Minimum of 2 years experience post Anesthesiology speciality degree
  • Significant experience in the management of emergencies and trauma cases
  • Current ATLS, ETC, JATEC or EMTS certification or refresher course from within the last 5 years
  • Comfortable with conducting resuscitation in ICU and recovery room in limited resources settings
  • Able to perform general and local anaesthesia autonomously
  • Able to develop and supervise local capacity for anaesthesia and post-operative care
  • Fluency in English and a good command of a second language is a strong asset (French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian)
  • Computer literacy

Desired profile and skills

  • Able to work under pressure and lead a multicultural team in a challenging environment
  • Good organizational skills, capacity to manage and work within a team
  • Sound knowledge of protocols and guidelines relevant to low-resource settings.
  • Previous international humanitarian and/or development experience in low-income countries (NGO's, IO or charity organization)
  • Previous experience within the Red Cross & Red Crescent Movement

Our operational context

  • In line with the principle of neutrality, the ICRC dœs not assign personnel to a country of which they are nationals
  • Our field staff members must be in good health and will have to do a medical check-up prior to departure in the field
  • Our field staff members are prepared to accept unaccompanied postings (i.e. no spouse, partner, children or dependents)
  • In line with our security guidelines, our staff members must hold a manual driving license
