Background
With support from AroFIIN, WFP will promote the consumption of fruits and vegetables in schools through nutrition education as part of the National School Meals Programme (Progas) under Germas. Progas was able to target children from low-income households and provide access to nutritious food at school and to teach fundamental principles around nutrition including the importance of fruits and vegetables. At the same time, Progas empowers local economies – such as farmers, fisherman, and other local business owners – through engaging them to supply food to primary school and provide financial incentives for community engagement in the cooking groups.
Overall, the partnership between WFP and ARoFIIN will focus on strengthening the nutrition education resources that emphasize the promotion of fruits and vegetable consumption under Progas guidelines and BCC (Behaviour Change Communication) campaign materials of the Ministry of Education and Culture. The partnership will pilot the newly made materials to SDN 02 Ciloa Kramatmulya, Kuningan, West Java.
The effectivity of the materials is assessed through a baseline and end-line study on the students’ knowledge and behaviour regarding fruit and vegetables. Focus-group discussions arranged among parents and teachers are also part of the Knowledge, Attitude and Practices (KAP) survey. The baseline was conducted in March 2019 to measure the knowledge and behaviour levels of the students. Focus-group discussions were also arranged on the existing BCC materials from Ministry of Education and Culture. The final report recommended improvement in material design and output.
The objectives of the creative re-strategy on BCC materials will concentrate on converting the existing messages through innovative design, forms, and delivery.
