Organizational Setting

The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.

The position is located in the FAO Representation in Kenya

Reporting Lines

The Intergrated Innovative Food Systems Expert will work under the overall supervision of FAOR and direct supervision of the Sub Programme Team Leader for Strengthening inclusive value chains.

Technical Focus

The general objective of this assignment is to serve as the technical focal point for implementation of the Integrated actions for innovative food systems across rural-urban communities’ project. Through the implementation, it is expected that the project will ultimately achieve the goal of improving access and availability of safe, healthy and nutritious food for rural and urban populations through promoting food systems innovation, entrepreneurship, fostering food systems related job activities for vulnerable groups and strengthening the urban-rural linkages.

Tasks and responsibilities

• Focal point for the implementation of the integrated actions for innovative food systems across rural-urban communities project in Nairobi and Kisumu counties, Kenya.
• Establishment (in Kisumu) and strengthening (for both Nairobi and Kisumu) of the Food Liaison Advisory Group (FLAG).
• Provide support to the Nairobi County in the finalization of the food systems strategy and the development of the action plan for implementation.
• Provide support to the food systems analysis for specific value chains (potentially under fresh fruits and vegetables) for Kisumu and finalize the analysis for Nairobi County. This analysis will also include food related entrepreneurial, income and employment opportunities especially for the women and youth. The analysis will also incorporate a separate food loss assessment.
• Supporting Nairobi and Kisumu counties in the design and management of the call for proposals for innovative food systems mini grants targeted for entrepreneurs and aimed at improving food systems.
• Establish and maintain partnerships with relevant stakeholders and initiatives at county level while identifying synergistic opportunities for collaboration.
• Facilitate and coordinate capacity building activities for the Food Liaison Advisory Group (FLAG), county staff and county agriculture advisory agents.
• Coordination of the following meetings\:
o Project steering committee meetings;
o Project management unit meetings.
• Prepare periodic progress report on all matters concerning the implementation of the project describing performance, achievement and challenges.
• Facilitating city-to city exchange with at least two selected cities already involved in food systems planning and actions.
• Promoting the mainstreaming of food systems analysis and planning in the University Curricula in Kenya.
• Liaise with the Rome technical unit and provide reports as requested.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements
• Advanced university degree in development studies, economics, social science, and other related fields with understanding and experience in urban and territorial planning.
• 5 - 7 years of relevant experience in food systems or value chain development.
• Working knowledge of English and Kiswahili.
• National of Kenya.

Technical/Functional Skills
• Working experience on participatory planning approach at urban level with International Organizations, preferably UN.
• Extent and relevance of experience in urban food system related planning and assessment.
• Extent and relevance of experience in multistakeholder engagement in food system dialogue and planning involving a broad range of stakeholders.
• Familiarity with working with local governmental institutions and understanding of the local context.
• Previous experience in integrating gender and nutrition issues in agriculture and urban food systems.
• Good interpersonal skills and ability in facilitating meeting, networking and communication between different stakeholders.
