Deputy Director-General (Programmes) - DDP

Summary of Duties and Functions

The role of the Deputy Director-General for Programmes (DDG-P) is primarily to increase the Organization’s capacity to design and implement interdisciplinary responses in support of countries achieving their Strategic Development Objectives. The DDG-P serves as the bridge between FAO’s technical knowledge arm and its operational arm, through FAO’s five Strategic Programmes. In particular, the Deputy Director-General will\:

  • Provide strategic direction and oversight to the five Strategic Programme Management Teams, the Programme Support and Technical Cooperation Department (PS) and the Investment Centre Division (DPI), ensuring the required environment for delivering the Organization's relevant core functions and organizational results;
  • Oversee the Office of the Chief Statistician (OCS);
  • Provide strategic direction and oversight to the five Liaison Offices for the European Union (Brussels), Japan (Yokohama), North America (Washington, DC), the Russian Federation (Moscow) and the UN Offices in Geneva;
  • Advise the Director-General on all aspects concerning strategic programmes management, mobilization of resources, investment support activities, coordination of the Organization’s work in Statistics as well as the functional relationship between headquarters and liaison offices;
  • Advocate FAO’s policy position with respect to the areas under his/her mandate and communicate its messages;
  • Act as chairperson of the Programme Implementation and Monitoring Board and the Evaluation Committee.


General Requirements
  • Post graduate qualifications or equivalent experience in a field related to the work of the Organization
  • Demonstrated professional competence and Management/strategic leadership of a high order
  • Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and a limited knowledge of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese or Russian
  • Ability to lead and work effectively with a diverse team of people of different national and cultural backgrounds in an international setting
