ASSISTANT PROGRAMME SPECIALIST (SOCIAL AND HUMAN SCIENCES)

Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences Sector (ADG/SHS), the guidance from the Director of Policies and Programmes and the Director of Partnerships and Outreach, and the direct supervision of the Chief of the Inclusion and Rights Section (INC), the incumbent is responsible for providing professional and technical support, research and analysis, towards the work of the Section as well as multi-sectoral activities and initiatives.  

 

The incumbent works within the frameworks of UNESCO’s Medium Term Strategy (C/4s), the approved Programme and Budget (C/5) and global strategic frameworks such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and other relevant frameworks (https\://en.unesco.org/about-us/introducing-unesco). He/she will provide professional and technical support to more senior as well as to field staff, and undertake research, analysis and exploration of programme priorities and projects. Within this context, the incumbent will undertake the following\:

  • Drawing on the legacy of the Slave Route Project, contribute to the development of a work stream to address\: the study of the impact of injustices of the past on current phenomena of racism, discrimination and exclusion, including persisting and new forms of slavery and servitude; the translation of these findings into technical advice and assistance towards the formulation of public policies; the development of new approaches, guidelines and tools to improve memory education  related to tragic histories, the representation of slavery in museums and public places and the elaboration of awareness-raising and capacity-building activities, including at the city level.
  • Within the framework of the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024)  and  on the basis of the work and cooperation achieved through the International Coalition of Inclusive and Sustainable Cities – ICCAR, and the other UNESCO cities networks, contribute to the design and implementation of activities  that promote the rights and the inclusion of the most vulnerable people, such as persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, migrants and refugees, to reinforce the fight against racial prejudices, discrimination and exclusion and to deepen the reflection on the conditions for healing, reconciliation and inclusion in societies. 
  • Contribute to the conceptualization and implementation of other activities of the Section notably to fight against racist and xenophobic stereotypes and their instrumentalization in political life, to promote sport as a tool for inclusion and non-discrimination as well as to make a better use of social media to advocate against discrimination and racism.

  • Support the implementation of a human rights-based approach (HRBA) in UNESCO , building on the UN common understanding as well as on approaches and tools that emerge from relevant interagency platforms.

  • Assist in carrying out tasks relating to the Section’s contribution to UN interagency work, including platforms on human rights mainstreaming, reporting mechanisms, such as the Universal Periodic Review, etc.

  • Help integrate the gender equality perspectives in the work of the Section, particularly in activities linked to the Slave Route Project and the International Decade for People of African Descent, as well as youth empowerment as a vector for action and as a partnership for implementation.

  • Assist in the elaboration of a resource mobilization strategy and the subsequent development of innovative project proposals and also support efforts to expand partnerships within the UN system as well as with other stakeholders. 

 

 

Education

  • Advanced university degree in the field of social and/or human sciences or in related areas.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in the field of social and/or human sciences. 
  • Relevant experience acquired at the international level.
  • Experience in implementing programmes and/or projects in the area of social inclusion and human rights.

Skills and competencies

  • Knowledge of issues pertaining to human rights and/or social inclusion within UNESCO’s areas of competence.
  • Good organizational and project design skills.
  • Good analytical skills with ability to undertake research including the collection and synthesis of information from various sources.
  • Excellent (oral and written) communication skills, including the ability to draft and produce a variety of written material in a clear and concise manner.
  • Good interpersonal skills with ability to build and maintain effective partnerships at all levels.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and to maintain good working relations within a multi-cultural environment.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and to meet tight deadlines.
  • Good IT skills, including knowledge of standard office software.

Languages

  • Excellent knowledge of English or French and good knowledge of the other language.
