Background Information - Job-specific

Under the direct supervision of the UNOPS Programme Manager and/or Deputy Programmer Manager, the Interns will be based in Juba, South Sudan with frequent field visits to the project sites. He/she will be responsible for the coordination and support of the project team.


Functional Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the Engineer Intern include, but are not limited to:

General Functions

  • Support project planning, monitor and evaluate project engineering design and construction activities;
  • With coaching from their supervisor, participate in identifying, mitigating, and monitoring project risks.
  • Support in preparing technical specifications, bidding documents and tendering process.
  • Provide support  in internal and external reviews;
  • Provide quality assurance support;
  • Support the Project Manager in ensuring strict and consistent application of UNOPS rules and regulations and ensure the implementation of clear accountability mechanisms within the project to which they are assigned
  • Support in monitoring all project activities in relation to the respective project work plans and take corrective action, when necessary, to ensure the timely and cost-effective delivery of project outputs;
  • Participate in lessons learned sessions;
  • Identify ways to improve project processes or products with coaching from the project team;

The internship will also span broader aspects related to project management and quality assurance. The aim of the internship is to enhance the theoretical knowledge of the intern through substantive and operational engagement with sustainability practices and policies of the Organization. The intern should be willing to learn about UNOPS and its core business and intervention areas, the work environment, and the technical/functional aspects of the job. In addition, UNOPS expects the intern should do their best to contribute to the goals of the organization. Interns are not hired for their experience, they are hired to do entry level work and hopefully contribute something to the company while they are gaining work experience.


Education

  • Enrollment in a University Programme such as Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. (or the equivalent) or have graduated from such studies within three (3) years prior to the applications date of the internship in Civil/Road Engineering

Languages

  • Fluency in written and spoken English required
  • Knowledge of second UN official language desirable
  • Fluency in one or more local languages in South Sudan is desirable.

Internship only applicable to South Sudan Nationals. 

This internship is not designed to lead to a staff/ICA position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend  from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions. Interns must make their own arrangements for accommodation and travel to and from the office.
