The purpose of the Internal Audit and Investigations Group is to provide independent and impartial assurance and advice to improve UNOPS operations.  The group reports on the use of resources administered by UNOPS and the effectiveness of internal control systems; and enhances the effectiveness of risk management, control and governance processes.   Furthermore, the Internal Audit and Investigations Group leads the Executive Director’s investigations into alleged fraud, corruption, waste of resources, abuse of authority or other misconduct and violations of UNOPS regulations, rules and administrative instructions.

Functional Responsibilities

IAIG is looking for an enthusiastic and well-experienced UNOPS candidate dedicated to improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the Organizations operations.

Under the general supervision of the Director, IAIG, and under the guidance of the Manager of Internal Audit, the individual will conduct internal audits to evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls in accordance with IIA Standards and UNOPS policies and procedures. This involves financial, operational, performance and compliance audits, as well as the following related activities:

  • Taking the lead on assigned IAIG exercises and ensuring the quality of IAIG colleagues. This includes contributing to IAIG annual audit risk assessment and developing work plans.
  • Communicating orally and in writing audit results to management and making presentations to management is required;
  • Coordinate project audits carried out by external audit firm and monitor the status of implementation of audit recommendations and assess whether appropriate actions were taken close audit recommendations;
  • Actively contribute to IAIG work on data analytics and any other specific projects.
  • Work closely and support the Investigation Section.

The ICA will report to the Manager of the Internal Audit Section. A formal evaluation of the ICA’s work shall be performed two weeks prior the expiry of the contract term, and at other intervals as required.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

a. Education 
  • Master’s degree in finance, accounting, audit, economics, business management, commerce or related fields is required.
  • A Bachelor's degree in one of the fields above with additional two years of relevant experience, will be considered in lieu of a Master's degree.   
b. Work Experience 
  • Minimum 7 years in the field of Finance (5 years at specialist level or equivalent); or Human Resources (5 years at specialist level or equivalent); or Procurement (5 years at Specialist level or equivalent); or acting as Head of Support Services (can be combined with experience in one of the fields above) is required (9 years with a Bachelor's degree).
  • Minimum of 7 years' experience within the UN system, out of which, at least 5 years working at UNOPS (7 years working for UNOPS will also be acceptable).  
c. Languages
  • Fluency in English is required. Spanish and French is desired.
