PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Under the broad guidance and support from the Programme Area Manager / Infectious Hazard Management, the purpose of this post is to further contribute to ongoing efforts of stakeholders to develop and/or implement the prevention and control strategies, tools and capacities for Yellow Fever. The medical officer will provide support in the area of epidemiological surveillance and response in line with the IHM/WHE plan for 2018. In addition, the incumbent will provide technical support on other high threat emergencies.
Objectives of the Programme and of the immediate Strategic Objective
The mission of the WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme (The Programme) is to build the capacity of Member States to manage health emergency risks and, when national capacities are overwhelmed, to lead and coordinate the international health response to contain outbreaks and to provide effective relief and recovery to affected populations.
The Infectious Hazard Management Unit of the Health Emergencies Programme is responsible for establishing risk mitigation strategies and capacities for priority high-threat infectious hazards. This includes developing and supporting prevention and control strategies, tools and capacities for high-threat infectious hazards, establishing and maintaining experts networks to detect, understand and manage new or emerging high threat infectious hazards as well as providing secretariat support for the implementation of the Eliminate Yellow fever Epidemics (EYE) strategy.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
In order to develop and support the implementation of strategies and tools for preparedness, prevention and control of Yellow fever, and other high-threat infectious, the Medical Officer will carry out the following activities\:
  • To strengthen YF-specific surveillance activities, integrated into IDSR, in affected countries in the region
  • To improve the detection and management of clinical cases including systematic application of case definitions and case management guidelines
  • To improve YF laboratory diagnostic capacity in the region, at national and regional level including coordination of laboratory network and training needs within the region
  • To support entomologists and technical experts for strengthening vector surveillance and control and coordinating with disease surveillance functions
  • To contribute to YF risk analysis for country prioritization
  • To perform other tasks related to yellow fever and the EYE strategy as needed
  • To perform any other duty assigned by the supervisor.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Essential\: Master’s degree in epidemiology or Public Health with a University degree in medecine.
Eperience
Essential\:
At least seven years related experience in implementation of yellow fever or public health surveillance and outbreak investigation and response.
Desirable\:
Experience working in an international organization. Experience working in developing countries. Experience on prevention and control of yellow fever, VHFs, cholera and meningitis including other outbreak prone diseases.
Use of language skills
Essential\: Excellent knowledge of English or French.
Desirable\: Intermediate knowledge of one of the above as a second language in addition to the above.
Other Skills
Excellent knowledge of Microsoft office applications
