Background Information - Pakistan

UNOPS commenced operations in Pakistan in 1999 and significantly up-scaled activities from 2005 on wards to support populations affected by and vulnerable to earthquakes. In 2010, UNOPS opened a permanent office in Islamabad to support the Government of Pakistan and other partners to undertake humanitarian and reconstruction services, following the most devastating flood in the nation’s history. UNOPS Pakistan has been implementing projects in the areas of early recovery and reconstruction of community infrastructure, project management and related monitoring and verification, community development, fund management, and procurement. UNOPS is based in Islamabad and has a provincial offices in Peshawar and Karachi. 

Background Information - Job-specific

UNOPS highly values interns’ contributions and realizes the importance of learning during an internship. The internship programme will include on the job training and exposure to various project management tools, as well as a daily exposure to and involvement in a wide range of topics related to sustainable development. The incumbent may also have opportunities to meet and engage with national government counterparts, other UN colleagues and other development partners. The intern will have access to a large offering of online training on the comprehensive UNOPS intranet and opportunities to communicate with UNOPS HQ, Regional Office, and other country offices.

UNOPS encourages the intern to raise specific wishes regarding learning opportunities before and during the internship.

The duties are Islamabad based. Missions outside Islamabad are not foreseen but are possible, if such support is required.

Terms and Conditions

UNOPS Pakistan will provide the intern with the following:

  • Workspace in a shared office including a computer and stationery 
  • Use of common office facilities, as for all UNOPS staff
  • The incumbent shall receive a monthly stipend designed to contribute to the cost of daily expenditures such as commuting and meals
  • If mission travel is undertaken, Daily Subsistence Allowance, in accordance with UN policy
  • The internship comes with no expectations of future employment with UNOPS as a direct result of the internship

Functional Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

The Communications and Partnership Development Intern will work in the Partnership Development Unit under the supervision of the Partnership Development Manager and Communications Focal Point. S/he will support the Partnerships Unit in implementing the Pakistan Communications Strategy in order to increase the visibility of UNOPS in the sub-region by communicating on our results and activities. S/he will also work closely with the Partnership Development Unit to support business development activities including research, business intelligence and proposal development as required. The Intern will liaise with internal colleagues at HQ, regional office and the Hub to provide required support. S/he will play an important role in developing content for communications and partnerships materials, planning communications and outreach activities, knowledge management and dissemination of key NPOH, partner, donor and government development information.

In particular the Intern shall:

1. Support the implementation of the Pakistan Communication Strategy.
  • Support the preparation of external communication materials customized for target key audiences such as donors, UN agencies, governments, foundations, NGOs, civil society and the private sector for effective outreach among existing and potential partners.
  • Support in managing the Pakistan social media channels, including producing regular content.
  • Develop content, presentations, briefings, speaking points and other external communication material as required.
  • Develop written content, including blogs, articles, stories and press releases.
  • Follow-up with Pakistan projects to ensure that the achievements of these projects are properly captured in the right communication formats for external outreach purpose.
  • Assist in the development of articles and stories from Pakistan for internal communication channels (NPOH, Asia Region and UNOPS newsletters and social media).
  • Support in collating and organizing project information, images and other relevant documents required in Partnership Development.
  • Brainstorm and pitch ideas for communications activities and content that promote the country strategy.Support the Partnership Development activities
    2. Support the Partnership Development activities
  • Assist in the research, collation and analysis of partnership possibilities in Pakistan;
  • Assist in the elaboration and maintenance of partnership documents;
  • Assist in compiling and reviewing relevant information for the Client Relationship Management tool;
  • Assist in the research, collation, elaboration and maintenance of country strategic profiles;
  • Assist in the documentation and analysis of, as well as input into, relevant UN framework documents;
  • Support in collating and organizing project information, images and other relevant documents required in Partnership Development;
  • Support the  implementation of the stakeholder management and communications strategy for Partnership Development;
  • Support in Project Proposal writing and development.
  • Support any other function as deemed necessary by the Partnership Development Officer.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

1. Academic qualifications

  • Interns should be enrolled in a university degree programme in such as Bachelor, Masters or Ph.D. (or the equivalent), or have graduated from such studies within three years prior to the application date of the internship
  • Intern’s degree programme should be in Communications, Journalism or a related field.

2. Language Skills

Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second language related to the NPOH countries is an asset

3. Computer Literacy

  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required
  • Knowledge and experience in using graphic design software such as Adobe Photoshop/ Illustrator/ InDesign or similar is an asset

4.      Work experiences

  • Fresh graduates are encouraged to apply for the post
  • Experience working on partnership development or communication will be given preference
  • Experience in SMM

This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions. Interns are responsible for their own arrangements for accommodation, travel, and necessary visa arrangements.
