The Associate Director, Social Policy leads UNICEF’s work on Social Policy. Its purpose is to: 1. Provide intellectual, technical, managerial and advocacy leadership in the formulation and implementation of its Social policy vision, advocacy and programming within UNICEF’s overall mission and to advise the Executive Director on related policy matters. This includes strengthening UNICEF engagement at global, regional and country level in the analysis, debate, formulation and implementation of advocacy and programming around child poverty, social protection, public finance for children and local governance, toward advancing the realization of children’s rights and improving equity and inclusion. 2. Participate, with other parts of UNICEF, in building partnerships at the global level in research, analysis and advocacy around economic and social policies in order to leverage resources and results for children and women. 3. Provide, ensure and manage high quality technical advice and support to UNICEF regional and country offices in the programme areas covered by social policy and to provide high-quality advice to the senior management of UNICEF in these areas.

The Associate Director, Social Policy leads UNICEF’s work on Social Policy.  Its purpose is to:

  1. To qualify as a champion for every child you will have…

Qualifications:

  • An Advanced University Degree (Master’s level) in the Social Sciences is required. Advanced degree in economics, social or public policy is an asset.
  • A minimum of 13 years professional experience that combines intellectual and managerial leadership in development cooperation at the international level, some of which served in developing countries is required.
  • Substantive experience in economic and social policy analysis, advocacy and technical assistance at the national and international levels.
  • Experience with UNICEF field programmes is considered an asset.
  • Excellent command of written and oral English is required.  A good working knowledge of Spanish or French is highly desirable.  Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.

Person Profile

  • Excellent knowledge and familiarity with key issues in international development policy, economic and social policy and knowledge management as applicable to children’s and women’s rights.
  • Excellent analytical, writing, public speaking and advocacy skills in social and economic policy fields.
  • Proven competencies in the management of teams oriented to the provision of technical support and analysis.
  • Proven familiarity with the use and application of human rights-based approaches in development.
