Job Description

The WPE Prevention Officer (PO) will manage the provision of prevention programming at the Women and girls safe spaces established within KCCA Health Facilities and via mobile community outreach to women and girls who are survivors or at risk of gender based violence (GBV). The PO will train and supervise the WPE Assistant Prevention Officers, who will increase women’s and girls’ access to information about risks, services, and risk mitigation activities. The PO will work to ensure that community mobilization activities, safety assessments, outreach visits, government and other organization meetings, and community-based activities are planned, implemented, and monitored.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design and monitor GBV prevention activities, ensuring these activities are informed by target beneficiaries and correspond to their priorities and safety.
  • Establish and coordinate Women Committees comprised of members from the targeted communities to conduct women-led risk reduction activities, safety audits and assessments.
  • Building the capacity of WPE Volunteers, Women Committees and other community structures on GBV Core Concepts, safety audit and service mapping tools, reporting and advocacy skills, and community mobilization.
  • Work with YARID – Local partner organization in the roll out of new initiatives e.g. EMAP and while tracking progress on implementation and engagement of targeted clients.
  • Implement prevention and community-based advocacy initiatives based on identified needs and Safety Audit reports that reflect the voices of women and girls.
  • Conduct training and dialogues with women and men community members, community leaders and key informants on the topics of GBV, women’s rights, gender equality in line with priorities identified by women and girls.
  • Conduct outreaches to disseminate information of services available to women and girls and raise awareness with the WPE Assistant Prevention Officers, Volunteers and the Women Committees.

Other Responsibilities

  • Work with families, caregivers and communities to support in building and strengthening a more protective environment for adolescent girls and to meet their specific needs.
  • Support data collection through M&E tools and systems, ensuring strict adherence to confidentiality and GBV best practice principles.
  • Submit daily, weekly, and monthly comprehensive work plans and reports to the supervisor.
  • Provide ongoing supervision, support, mentoring and guidance to Assistant Prevention officers to ensure outreach services are of high quality.
  • Participate and represent WPE program in relevant committees, clusters and task forces meetings.
  • Support the immediate supervisor to complete monthly cash projections, spend out plans and raise PRs for needed supplies.
  • Carry out performance management evaluation (PME) and ensure PME documentation for direct reports is in place and followed up regularly.
  • Provide continuous feedback to the the supervisor on any challenges in the work implementation to be addressed directly with corrective steps/measures if needed.
  • Assist in the orientation of new staff by providing them with the necessary documents and materials for orientation.

Internal: Close coordination with IRC Protection, M&E, Finance, HR, Operations

External:Close collaboration with donors, local actors (local NGOs, UN agencies, government) and service providers’ part of the urban survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) referral system.


  • University degree in Social Sciences: Social Work, Gender/Women Studies, Public Health, or other appropriate fields
  • At least 3 years’ experience in the field of protection and Gender-based violence prevention in an emergency setting
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills and ability to present ideas effectively, in both oral and written form.
  • Emotional maturity and stability to resolve conflicts in non-violent way and maintain appropriate boundaries.
  • Good interpersonal skills including ability to gain trust and build relationships.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks; proven self-initiative and problem solving abilities.
  • High standard of spoken and written English.
  • Good computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, Outlook, and Power Point.
