Software Engineer

Home Based - May require travel (Home Based)

Watsi is a nonprofit that builds technology to administer health financing systems in emerging markets. We put patients first in everything we do, and are committed to helping countries around the world accelerate progress towards universal health coverage.

We’re hiring a Software Engineer to help us develop Meso - a suite of mobile and web applications that streamline the core components required to run any national health insurance system. It runs on Android (Java and Kotlin), Ruby on Rails, React, and Redux. That said, we're not dogmatic about the technologies we use and care more about the impact our product has than the languages we use to build it.

In this role, you will play a critical role in building infrastructure for a health financing platform that is rapidly expanding across multiple countries. At Watsi, the code we write directly impacts people’s health by helping governments and health providers digitally administer health insurance nationally and transparently.

What you'll work on:

  • You’ll build mobile apps that will be used every day by health facilities in low-resource settings.

  • You’ll improve and maintain the API that powers our platform synchronizing real-time health encounter data from multiple health facilities.

  • You’ll develop interfaces to help health administrators manage their health facilities, as well as visualizations that provide insight into the cost, quality, and accessibility of care for their members.

  • You’ll travel to East Africa 2 - 3 times a year (sometimes for 1 - 2 weeks at a time) to develop technologies alongside the local health facilities and insurance agencies that will use them.

  • You’ll contribute to evolving our product and engineering processes as we scale.

  • You’ll help fellow engineers in their growth and development with thoughtful mentorship and coaching.

  • You’ll guide architectural decisions to address scalability concerns as we discover them.

  • You’ll improve the reliability and security of our systems with rigorous testing and security best practices.

Who you are:

  • You have at least 6 to 7 years of professional software engineering experience.

  • You have full-stack experience with both web and mobile development, experience with health/health insurance tech a bonus.

  • You are equally excited to write code as you are to mentor junior engineers and build engineering processes across our team.

  • You are pragmatic in your approach to programming and care more the impact a product produces than the framework or languages you use to build it.

  • You are located in a time zone that has a significant time overlap with North American time zones (PST, CST, and EST).

What to expect at Watsi

"How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives." — Annie Dillard

  • You will have the opportunity to directly impact people’s ability to access healthcare — all while working with innovative technology to define a new industry.

  • You will work on a globally distributed team spanning three continents and enjoying a flexible schedule, plenty of vacation time, and great benefits.

  • You will collaborate with kind and interesting people — we’re proud to have photographers, surfers, pastry chefs, rock climbers, and dancers in our midst.

  • You will join an organization that strives to build an inclusive culture made up of people as diverse as those we serve — we are an equal opportunity employer and encourage applicants of all backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
