• One short essay on a subject relevant to the political, or security situation in the areas of operation of the International Criminal Court (maximum of 750 words, single spaced, type written).

Contract Duration

Interns are required to work full time for a period for six months. Internship placements shall not be extended beyond six months.

Organisational Context

Article 68 of the Rome Statute provides a general protection obligation of the Court over individuals at risk on account of their interaction with the Court. The Protection Strategies Unit is part of the Investigation Division of the Office of the Prosecutor and is tasked with developing Situation Threat and Risk Assessments and Protection Strategies for all areas of operation related to situations under investigation, in order to guide investigative activities to prevent and manage foreseeable risks related to interaction with individuals. Additionally, the Protection Strategies Unit conducts Individual Risk Assessments for all individuals over which the Office of the Prosecutor has a duty of care, advises on matters related to witness protection and security, and identifies and implements protective measures in consultation with the Court’s Victims and Witnesses Section.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Monitoring and analysis of news and (social) media

• Conduct open source research on situation countries and on topics of relevance to the Protection Strategies Unit

• Develop draft profiles for individual risk assessments

• Conduct open source research and monitoring of trials

• Assist in drafting minutes, reports, and other documents and preparing and giving presentations on assigned topics

• Conduct general administrative tasks in support of the work of the Unit

• Any other tasks as entrusted by the Team

• NB: due to confidentiality and security reasons, during the internship, the intern will not directly interact with victims/witnesses and will not travel to the field to conduct assessments. The internship will take place entirely in the HQ and aims at supporting the protection Strategies Unit in its tasks.

Required Qualifications

Education:

All Candidates must have a degree or be in the final stages of their studies at a recognized university – preferably in political science, international relations, or security management. Candidates are expected to have a very good record of academic performance.

Experience:

Internship placements focus on candidates in the early stages of their professional careers therefore; practical experience is not an essential prerequisite for selection. However, practical experience that is relevant to the work of the Court may be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Able to adapt to multicultural and multilingual working environments.
• Possesses strong teamwork skills (listens, consults and communicates proactively).
• Has acquired a good standard of computer skills (including Microsoft Office applications).
• Strong drafting skills are required.
• Other important qualities are discretion, reliability, intellectual rigor, precision, perseverance, honesty, creativity, co-operative spirit and integrity.

Knowledge of Languages:

Proficiency in one of the working languages of the Court, French or English, is required. Working knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of Arabic or Russian is considered an asset.

Remuneration

Please note that the ICC is not able to provide all participants in the Internship and Visiting Professional Programme with remuneration, nor is it possible to provide reimbursement for expenses incurred during the internship or visiting professional placement.

Applicants should therefore be able to support themselves for the duration of their internship or placement. 

Limited funding may, however, be available through the ICC’s Trust Fund for the Development of Interns and Visiting Professionals, which receives donations from States Parties and other donors to fund nationals of States Parties from developing regions. These donations are equally divided between the four Organs of the Court.

If funding is available, the Human Resources Section shall assess a candidate’s eligibility in accordance with the terms of reference of the Trust Fund as agreed by the donors. 

In order to be eligible, the applicant must, among other criteria, be a national from a country that is a State Party to the Rome Statue and appears on the United Nations Statistics Division’s list of developing regions.

Candidates eligible for funding shall receive detailed information and further instructions after the selection process is finalized. Stipends will always be agreed at the time of offering the internship. No funding will be provided at a later stage.
