Organizational Setting

The FAO Representation in Uganda provides technical assistance to the Government of Uganda in the agriculture, forestry, fisheries and related sectors. The Program Associates – Farmer Field Schools will support the community planning, implementation and monitoring of projects GCP/UGA/054/EC project entitled “Global Climate Change Alliance plus (GCCA )” and UNJP/SFE/004/WMO project entitled “Agricultural Climate Resilience Enhancement Initiative (ACREI) funded by the European Union and the Adaptation Fund, respectively. These projects aim to strengthen key government institutions at central and decentralized levels and build the resilience of communities in the face of a changing climate.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall guidance of the FAO Representative in Uganda and in close collaboration with the Deputy FAO Representative and the Project Manager, the Program Associates will be under the direct supervision of a Program Officer & Field Coordinator.

Technical Focus

The Programme Associate – Farmer Field Schools (FFS) will be responsible for community planning, implementation and monitoring of Farmer Field School related activities in the assigned districts.

Tasks and responsibilities

The Programme Associate will\:

  • Oversee the planning, implementation and monitoring of all FFS in the assigned districts or region
  • Support the monitoring of investment pilots and value chain development in the assigned districts or region
  • Support community-based watershed management planning, implementation and monitoring.
  • Disseminate information about climate change to target beneficiaries
  • Ensure collaboration with other FFS initiatives in the assigned districts or region
  • Document lessons and best practices from the FFS interventions
  • Supporting the strengthening of Village Savings and Loan Associations within APFS/FFS, FFS networks and other cooperatives for value chain addition
  • In collaboration with the National Gender Officer, ensure gender mainstreaming into the FFS, FFS networks, Cooperatives and other community based groups supported by the project
  • Prepare quarterly update on progress of all FFS interventions
  • Perform any other duties
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
  • University Degree in food security, agriculture (agronomy and livestock), agricultural Economics/Economics, rural development or social science, natural resource management or related fields.
  • At least three years of relevant experience in agriculture production,, ecosystem and natural resources management, community development or related fields.
  • Working knowledge of English.
  • National of Uganda

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Extent and relevance of experience and knowledge in Farmer Field Schools, Farmer Organization, community development and community mobilization, agricultural livelihoods and production or related fields in Uganda
  • Extent and relevance of experience and knowledge on climate change, value change development, sustainable land management and community-based watershed management/ natural resources management
  • Previous experience in providing training to local communities
  • Extent of knowledge and experience on gender issues
  • Extent of knowledge and experiences in working with various stakeholders in Uganda including UN, Government, NGOs, private sector, academics, and others
  • Writing and communication skills
  • Ability to manage a high workload, meet tight deadlines and multi-task under pressure
