Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Office of the Director of the Division on Technology and Logistics (DTL) in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The Economics Affairs Officer reports to the Director of the Division.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Economic Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

Economic and research Analysis:
- Drafts and/or finalizes briefing notes, statements, talking points and speeches for UNCTAD Secretary-General (SG), the Deputy Secretary-General (DSG) and the Director of DTL;
- Undertakers research and analysis in policy-related issues of direct relevance to Division's mandates and takes leading role in preparing various written outputs, e.g. blogs, background papers, reports, or articles on behalf of the Director;
- Reviews official material and DTL publications submitted to the Director for clearance, ensuring both substance and consistency with the officials UNCTAD policy positions.

Coordination, programme and intergovernmental support:
- Leads or coordinates certain project and initiatives under the responsibility of the Director;
- Follows up with Branches on requests made by the Director and follows up on agreements reached with other Divisions, institutions or delegations;
- Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary to support the Director;
- Supports the Division's Director in intergovernmental deliberations: executing and following-up, as appropriate, on decisions and/or requests made during meetings with substantive Divisions and/or Delegations concerning the implementation of DTL's work programme.

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to operate effectively across organizational boundaries.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in economics or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development issues/programmes or related area is required. Five years of experience in the area of technology and trade policy, out of which at least three in the United Nations Common System or an international organization, is desirable. Experience in substantive servicing of inter-governmental meetings is an advantage. Experience in leading communication and outreach for major publications and events is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required, knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by a competency based interview.

United Nations Considerations
