1.     Organizational Context

 

  1. Organizational Setting

     

    The post is located in the PCT Translation Division in the PCT Services Department of the Patents and Technology Sector. The PCT Translation Division is responsible for delivering high-quality publication-ready translation in relation to patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).  In particular, the PCT Translation Division is responsible for the translation of scientific, technical and legal documents, mainly the abstracts of international patent applications and scientific, technical and legal reports relating to the patentability of inventions.

     

  2. Purpose Statement

     

    As part of the English Translation Section, the incumbent is required to assess translation quality, respond to linguistic queries, and translate and self-revise specialized scientific and technical texts.

     

  3. Reporting Lines

     

    The incumbent works under the supervision of the Head of the English Translation Section.

     

     

2.      Duties and Responsibilities

 

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties\:

 

a.   Assess the quality of translations provided by the Division’s translation suppliers, including both internal and external, in a wide range of scientific and technical subjects for accuracy of meaning and terminology; revise the translations of in-house translators as needed;

 

b.   Translate and self-revise texts in a wide range of scientific and technical subjects from German into English and from two other European PCT languages, meeting the standards of quality, quantity and timeliness of the Division;

 

c.   Provide detailed, comprehensive and authoritative answers on a variety of linguistic issues and queries to the Division’s translation suppliers including agencies, freelancers, and internal translators;

 

d.   Train, mentor and provide feedback to translators, translation trainees (fellows) and newly contracted agencies in the translation of technical documents from German to English and from two other European PCT languages on the specifics of PCT translation; contribute to the development of reusable training materials; prepare guidelines and reference materials for the improvement of quality; and provide input to the definition and implementation of quality assurance measures for the PCT Translation Division;

 

e.   Participate in the compilation of the terminology database of the PCT Translation Division;

 

f.    Participate in the selection and assessment of translation tests to identify suitable candidates for employment and external translation providers;

 

g.   Use and participate in the development of computer-assisted translation and terminology tools, providing regular feedback on and recommendations for their application within the Division; and perform the post-editing of machine translations for data collection, providing feedback on request;

 

h.   Perform other related duties as required.

 

 

3.      Requirements

 

Education

Essential

Advanced university degree in translation or modern languages, in a technical or scientific field or in a related field. A first-level university degree in one of the aforementioned subjects plus an additional two years of relevant professional experience in addition to the essential experience mentioned below may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

 

Experience

Essential

At least seven years of relevant professional experience, mainly in technical or scientific translation.

 

Desirable

Translation experience in the field of intellectual property.

 

Language

Essential

Mother tongue level of English and excellent knowledge of German (first working language).  Knowledge of at least two other European PCT publication languages (French, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish).

 

Desirable

Ability to translate from Spanish and Portuguese.

 

Knowledge of other PCT publication languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean or Russian).

5.      Information

 

Mobility\:  WIPO staff members are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Director General and may be assigned to any activities, office or duty station of the Organization.  Accordingly, the selected candidate may be required to move from time to time to new functions and/or to another duty station.

 

Annual salary\:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  The post adjustment (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change without notice in accordance with the rates as set within the UN Common System for salaries and allowances.  The figures quoted below are based on the August 2019 rate of 68.7%

Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.

Additional Information

 

Initial period of two years, renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.  No fixed-term appointment or any extension hereof shall carry with it any expectancy of, nor imply any right to, (further) extensions or conversion to a permanent appointment.
