Organizational Setting

The Animal Production and Health Division (AGA) promotes and facilitates the sustainable development of the livestock sector. It manages technical programmes and hosts technical networks in the areas of animal genetics, animal feeding and pastoralism, among others. AGA integrates scientific, technical expertise and policy advice, it facilitates policy dialogue (including through intergovernmental bodies), encourages good governance, manages knowledge and provides information, analysis and technical assistance for the development and implementation of innovative solutions to improve livestock production in a sustainable manner.

The post is located in the Animal Production and Genetics Branch (AGAG). The activities of the Branch cover all livestock production systems, from pastoralism to intensive systems, and aim to enhance the sustainability of the livestock sector in its three dimensions\: environmental, economic and social.


Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the Senior Animal Production Officer, AGAG, the consultant/PSA will report to the Animal Production Officer, AGAG.


Technical Focus

Animal production; dairy production; poultry production; family poultry; livestock farmer field schools; rural development and livestock value chains.

Tasks and responsibilities
The consultant/PSA will\:
  • Contribute to the production of technical documents, manuals, guidelines or other publications related to livestock production, family poultry production, good animal husbandry practices, and/or Livestock Farmer Field School (FFS);

  • Collect, select and analyze data for the production of publications and guidelines;

  • Provide expertise and support the implementation of FAO activities and programs in livestock sector development (particularly poultry and dairy);

  • Contribute to the production of training manuals and related capacity building materials;

  • Perform other duties as required.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
  • Advanced University Degree for consultants or University Degree in\: Animal Science, Veterinary Science or a related field;

  • At least five years of relevant experience in livestock sector development, particularly family poultry and small-scale dairy production;

  • Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese, Russian (for Consultants)

  • For PSAs, working knowledge of only one UN language is required.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Extent and relevance of experience in rural development and animal production, particularly family poultry and dairy production;
  • Extent and relevance of experience in the preparation, editing and revision of technical/scientific documents and training material related to livestock development (particularly family poultry and dairy production);
  • Extent and relevance of experience in collecting technical information and data;
  • Extent and relevance of experience in writing project-related documents and reports;
  • Familiarity with the work of the UN system, particularly the Rome-based Agencies;
  • Understanding of FAO policies and programmes is considered a strong asset.
